Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Kane.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been an artist since I was a child. I took a journey through the creative arts. I’ve done hair, I’ve been a chef and owned a catering company, I’ve been a DJ, I’m occasionally a stylist on set. I basically tried everything and then discovered Photography. It just got all of my talents into one. Now I’m getting really into videography as well. After 10 years of freelance photography, I opened a large photo studio last year and we are growing into something really special. I have brought other photographers into my space and we are like a little family now. Sharing ideas and helping one another fulfill concepts. I have a small marketing agency as well. We blend the needs of social marketing, web design and SEO with the content needs of any business. Whereas if I’m planning your marketing strategy I am also doing the photos and video for you. There are no holes in the process or waiting for other vendors to complete tasks. It’s full service, boutique style brand management. I’ve been referred to as a Swiss Army knife. Because I am not specialized and I truly apply myself to many talents. At this point, I’m growing the studio and making moves towards some really incredible and inspiring projects.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an artist, it’s never a straight shot to your goals. However, I began photography at the tail end of my culinary career and slowly grew my craft as I carried and delivered three babies. Having stayed at home status, gave me the flexibility to pursue my art and grow it slowly. As my kids all entered school age I gradually moved into having a full-time business. One struggle we all deal with is the slow season which is summer. But, now I plan ahead and use that time to work on personal projects and to give our own marketing more concentration. The slow season, while it is a financial strain, is an opportunity to dive into parts of the business that we don’t have time for the rest of the year.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Liz Kane & Co, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is different from others in that I do 100% of my post-production. I never farm out my work. I believe that the entire project needs to come from me and my eye. I’m very connected to my clients. Almost everyone becomes my personal friend after a project is complete. Everyone who works for me is a genuine, authentic and caring person. We don’t compete we work together. All of us are inspired and never settle for good enough. We will do anything to give an amazing image product and to help other businesses thrive. We are all dedicated alpha artists. Not one of us would consider doing what we love on the side. We’re all in.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, I have always had the luck of the Irish on my side. But, the natural ability to produce art is a lucky gift. One I’m very grateful for. I can’t really recall feeling unlucky in business. Even when it’s tough, I’m grateful that what’s tough is having too much work to do and not enough time. With this type of business referrals and reputation mean a lot. So, I hope that means that I’ve earned my success and haven’t just gotten lucky.
