Meet Lisa Luer of Lisa’s Confections in Sebastian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Luer.

Lisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My husband and I have been in and around the culinary world for fifteen or so years now. He is a chef by trade and I have always enjoyed helping him with catering events. I helped him with a fairytale baby shower and was asked to do the cupcakes. I spent so much time preparing the tablescape and making the cupcake stand by hand. I had so much fun making the cupcakes and setting them up that I wanted to do more! I started posting on Facebook and got very positive feedback and then the requests started coming in. I learned a little more with each order and loved the process every time! After a few months, I was invited to do a pop up at a local fudge shop, Kathleen had just opened “the marketplace bulk foods and more” a few months before. She makes amazing gourmet fudge and has local artists set up shop in her store. The minute I stepped into her little market, I knew I wanted to be a part of it! I sold out with my first pop up and continued with monthly events. This summer, I am moving into the marketplace bulk foods and more full time and sharing the space with her. I am very grateful to find someone that shares my passion to team up with. We have a really great group of local female artists at the store and I love spending time and sharing space with all of them.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing has ever been smooth in my life. I have become completely okay with that! I find the harder you work for something the more you appreciate it. We are a busy family with young boys. Both my husband and I hold down full-time jobs outside of my baking. Our youngest has an autoimmune disease that keeps us all up for days at a time. We are tired a lot, we always have so many things going on it’s hard to keep up with everything.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I bake! I make handmade cakes, cupcakes, and baked goods. I specialize in unique flavors and handmade details and custom tablescapes. I am constantly thinking of my next cupcake flavor! I love watching my customers react when I hand them a cake or cupcakes that I spent hours working on. It’s so personal to me, I spend so much time working on them, I still haven’t gotten over the joy I feel from getting a text or email with pictures of my work and a kind thank you message. It makes me want to do more every time! I was able to enter a cake for a charity event for habitat for humanity. I really didn’t know what to expect so I went all out! I spent weeks on this cake. When we entered the cake I overheard a couple arguing over if it was a real cake or not. That’s how you know you did well! The cake won the contest and sold for over $800 for the charity.

How do you define success?
That’s a tough one… I think I view it a little differently than most. Success to me is enjoyment and balance. If I am enjoying my work, making others happy and still spending time with my family and friends I feel like that is a success for me. I just really want happy customers!
