Today we’d like to introduce you to Alizee Brion, founder of Light On White.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alizee. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Light On White is an architecture and interior design studio specializing in luxury residential projects for private clients and property developers. As a turn-key service, we offer a cohesive vision of architecture and interior design, from initial space planning to bespoke finishing touches.
I started the business three years ago in London, where I was living at the time. Shortly after, I was offered the opportunity to work on a project in Miami and quickly realized that I needed to relocate the business (and my life!) to Miami. The city is experiencing a major cultural evolution. It is simply the most inspirational place to be as a designer right now.
Miami is growing so fast, the sheer number of project opportunities was reason enough to make the move but what I also discovered is how evolved the city is in terms of people’s tastes and openness to design. Today, our team comprises architects, interior designers, and project managers, working from our design studio in South Beach.
Working closely with our clients to offer a highly personalized design service, we continuously seek the most elegant and innovative design solutions. Our work has been featured in international design publications including Architectural Digest, Elle Décor and Homes & Garden.
Although most of our projects are located in South Florida, we do also take on international projects when they are truly unique.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has certainly been a steep learning curve! Setting up and running a successful business takes time and an infinite amount of dedication. As I didn’t study business, I had a lot to learn in a short amount of time. One of the early frustrations was that I wasn’t spending enough time designing because I was spending too much time doing all the administrative, accounting and managerial tasks that a business requires.
But I’m incredibly proud of how much we’ve already grown over a short period of time and with the right team in place. I’m now able to balance my roles as a designer and as director of the company much more happily. More than anything, I am a huge believer in the importance of doing what you love. When you are truly passionate about what you do, even the most challenging days will not feel like work.
Please tell us about Light On White.
Light On White is a full-service architecture and interior design studio. We rigorously approach both the architecture and the interior schemes of each project simultaneously, ensuring true cohesion throughout the design. My skills and experience are as much rooted in architecture as in interior design, so a cohesion and balance of the two is what we are best known for and what sets us apart from others. Rather than an obvious house style, this approach subtly connects our work, while still allowing each project to be a reflection of its unique client and context.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Tough question! Designing someone’s home is a very personal thing. One of the most important aspects of my job is connecting with my clients and understanding how they live so that we can make their home the most authentic expression of their lifestyle. A successful relationship with a client is as much about them being suited to you as you being suited to them.
Looking back, I probably should have turned down one or two projects that I knew were not quite right for Light On White and myself as a designer and trust that the right projects would come along. But starting a new business from scratch, I was determined to do everything in my power to make the business succeed so in that first year I took on almost every project I was offered.
Now, we are very fortunate to be able to better select which projects we work on and focus on the very top end residential market.
