Today we’d like to introduce you to Libby Volgyes.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Libby. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I launched Libby Vision in 2012 after spending seven years working as a newspaper photojournalist. Food photography was an easy decision for me – I had fallen in love with chefs while covering food at the newspaper, I saw the industry as a growing field and I had thought* I was good at it (hahaha nope!)
I had zero business training before launching Libby Vision so I had to learn how to run a successful business as well as improve my food photography enough so that I could take compelling photos for my clients.
I spent a lot of time, in the beginning, being scared and worried – worried I wouldn’t get clients, worried that I would disappoint them, even scared when I DID get big shoots. But I’ve always been a person that gets a little excited by fear – when something scares me a little I know something good is going to happen.
As the years passed, I developed a (what I hope is unique) style in my photos – I use props and ingredients to try and create a mood and an emotional connection to my food photos. I look for each photo to have a flow to it visually. I want to make you feel something when you look at my photos.
Today, I work for magazines, brands, and restaurants throughout South Florida. I’m still in love with chefs and the fear has turned into gratitude for all that I get to do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been filled with mistakes and I wouldn’t have it any other way. When I launched, my husband told me “you can make any mistake you want. But you can only make it once.”
I made a lot of mistakes. I dropped an expensive lens on the ground. I messed up a contract. I didn’t know how to manage expectations. But no matter the mistake, I’ve always held the philosophy that we’re not operating on children’s brains here. We’re photographing food. It’s supposed to be fun!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Libby Vision captures food, cocktails, portraits and interior photographs for restaurants, brands, and magazines. I’m known for creating messy, interesting, stylized scenes that tell the story of a dish or chef. I pride myself on operating at the highest level of business and to deliver the most compelling photographs out there.
What were you like growing up?
Once you meet me, it’s pretty clear I excelled at school. I always pushed myself to achieve and longed to see the world. Also, I was a horse-crazy kid, which was replaced with photography once I took my first beginning photography course. I always liked the outdoors and being in motion – still true today.
