Meet Leslie Baumann, MD of Baumann Cosmetic Dermatology in Design District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Baumann, MD.

Leslie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 1997, I started the first cosmetic dermatology research division at the University of Miami. We performed the FDA research trials that led to the approval of Botox, Dysport, Sculptra, Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane Silk, Ultrashape Power, Kybella, Tazorac, Tri-Luma, Rhofade and many other cosmetic products and procedures. Companies hire me to treat the patients in the trial because of my artistic ability and knowledge of facial anatomy. The after pictures must be perfect every time for the FDA to approve the products so it is a huge complement to be chosen to treat the patients that are presented to the FDA. In 2002, I published the first textbook on Cosmetic Dermatology (McGraw Hill) which is still the bestselling cosmetic dermatology textbook in the world and is in multiple languages. In 2004, I developed a system to divide patients into 16 Baumann Skin Types. This led to a NY Times bestseller and a PBS special- both called The Skin Type Solution. Patients come from all over the world to my dermatology practice for cosmetic procedures. I travel frequently around the US and other countries to teach doctors how to use the medical procedures once they are FDA approved. I have a separate business that trains doctors on how to perfect their injection skills and how to prescribe the proper skin care regimen for their patients. I work with over 50 companies to help develop their products and educate physicians about their products. In 2009, I left the University of Miami in 2009 to start my own private practice and consulting business. I travel often so I have 2 very well trained physician assistants who assist me in my practice.

Has it been a smooth road?
I had two boys early in my career so juggling being a mom and working and travelling is always a struggle. Now those sons are both teenagers- one is going to college. They are both very well balanced and self-sufficient kids so I believe that the fact that I could not be a helicopter parent helped them develop independence and self-sufficiency. I believe the best parenting decision I made was to insist upon a family dinner every night when I am in town so that we will communicate and understand the challenges that the other family members are facing. We work together well as a family team. I love to cook and I make a point to cook every night for my kids. They look forward to it and often bring their friends to dinner. My sons are now great cooks themselves.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Baumann Cosmetic Dermatology story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a full service cosmetic dermatology clinic that also performs research trials and trains doctors from around the world. We are known for several things:

1. Adopting the latest effective procedures before anyone else. Usually when a product is FDA approved, I already have 3-4 years of experience using it in the research trials. I introduce the procedure into my clinic around the time that I am beginning to train other doctors how to do the procedure.

2. New patients undergo a very thorough evaluation of their skin type, medical history and cosmetic procedure history and many baseline measurements including a Canfield Visia Camera analysis of their skin condition. Once their Baumann Skin type is identified, they are given a customized skin care regimen based on years of scientific research on the use of various ingredients on the 16 unique skin types. The system has been adopted by over 130 doctors in the US who follow my skin care recommendation process in a company called Skin Type Solutions Franchise Systems, LLC.

3. I am known for my work with injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers because I designed and performed the FDA research trials that led to the approval of these. I also author the white paper publications on these products that are used to share the data with other physicians.

4. I am very well known for cosmeceutical science. For 20 years I have written a monthly column in the leading dermatology newspaper (Dermatology News) and authored a textbook on Cosmeceuticals.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The big change in my industry is that cosmeceutical science is getting very scientifically complicated. I spend my time helping dermatologists understand the science behind new therapies. I believe that as consumers realize how complicated the science has become, they will start purchasing their skin care products from dermatologists because they are the ones who have 14 years of training on skin science and can understand these new technologies. The real key is knowing which technologies to use on each skin type. There is a lot to know but luckily there are many new effective skin care products that can make a big difference in skin health when used properly. They of course cam damage skin when the incorrect products are used or when products are used incorrectly. There is so much misinformation pout there. I write a blog LeslieBaumannMD.com to provide a brand agnostic approach to skin care and skin science. I also have an Instagram account @skintypesolutions that highlights a scientific point daily. I believe the future of the industry is educated consumers who know to look to their doctor (preferably their dermatologist) for skin care advice.

After reading this article, why would anyone go to any other physician? Dr. Braumann is a scientist, artist and an innovator in dermatology. When I go to BMI, I feel confident that I am getting the most innovative, safe products that are proven. She is all this article states. But more than this she is so pleasant and upbeat, and relatable. She makes you feel special and confident that you are well cared for. As a medical professional, I appreciate that she takes her time to educate me . I’m thrilled she is a mentoring and training other physicians. Her PA’s are talented, chosen and trained by her. I personally am now seeing Paula Pupera, and she is excellent. Tiffany and ALL of her staff are knowledgeable and kind. It’s just a “no brainer” to choose BMI, where the standard in cosmetic dermatology is set from. And the frosting on tha cake, the facility is architectureually so beautiful, it’s a bit like a museum. Very open, ito men it’s similar to when I go to Italy, the outside looks drab and you go inside and its incredible.
