Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Castro.
Leah, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Fashion has always been something I have been in to. It’s something I always have followed. I’ve sat on the idea of starting my own boutique for many years. I always wanted to provide clothing for women that will make them feel good and empowered! When the pandemic happened, I was unsure if I was going to be furloughed at my current job of being a flight attendant. The airline industry was going downhill very quickly. Flights cancelled left and right and I found myself sitting at home with plenty of time on my hands. I spoke about it briefly with my fiance and he was so excited about me starting my own business. His excitement, along with the discussion I had with other family members, motivated me to put the gas in this idle engine. I stayed up all day and night, applying pressure to myself. I honestly wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my family and my friends. The ones who support me the most. Of course, my customers and their comments/feedback motivates me as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My store has been opened for about three months. This has definitely been a learning process. I wouldn’t say so much of a smooth road. My first month was amazing and my second month was a struggle. I struggled with keeping customer’s intrigued and learning what marketing techniques work for me. I am still trying to find out what works for me via the trial and error method. I am still trying to find out how to gain new customers and reach out to many who don’t know about my business. I want my customers to trust my brand and for them to understand that while shopping with me, you’ll get quality materials and not just pieces because it’s “in style” or what’s trending at the time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My boutique is called L by Leah. It’s a brand that empowers women. I sell clothes for women of all shapes and sizes, ranging from XS-3XL. For me, it’s about helping women feel good. Every day won’t be a good day, but when you put on anything from L by Leah, you KNOW you look good. And when you look good, you feel good. In the short three months, I have been open, many of my customers rave about the awesome customer service I offer. Women can message me via social media or email and I quickly respond no matter what time of day it is. I literally get asked just about everything and I try my best to respond with the most straight forward answer. I don’t want to be deceitful just because I’m trying to make a dollar. It’s more about gaining that trust for me.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I have always been that popular girl that was friends with literally everybody. I have always been a selfless and kind-hearted person. At times, when I was younger and even now, I still find myself putting the needs of others before mine. I was very outgoing. I was involved in just about every organization I can be involved in if time allowed it, from elementary school to college. My mom always called me a natural-born leader. I strived to be the best I can be. I strived to make the organizations I was a part of the best that I knew it could be.
