Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakita Barnes.
Lakita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started baking when I was a teenager. I developed a passion for cooking and baking in my early 20’s. Throughout the years, I had only perfected sweet potato pies and a cream cheese pound cake. Three years ago, I developed an interest in wanting to decorate cakes, however I didn’t believe that I could do it. I reconnected with an old classmate two years ago who is a baker/cake decorator who started her business over five years ago. I often expressed to her that I wanted to get into the business but never made an effort until one day she said to me; you don’t want it you’re waiting around doing nothing you don’t want to make any money. It was those words that pushed me to step out on faith and give it a shot. A year and half ago, I gave it a shot and here I am today. It has not been an easy road, and it can be very challenging at times. I wanted to give up so many times but my passion for baking and servicing the people won’t allow me to do so. Kita Kakes was officially launched on February 4th, 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all. What has been challenging for me is decorating my cakes. In this new era of being a cake artist there are so many techniques to decorating and so much to learn. For some it comes natural but for myself it’s challenging. I had to learn not to compare myself to others, especially those who have been in the industry for a long time. I’m sure it took them time to perfect their skills. I had to learn to stay in my own lane and take it one day at a time. I struggle with myself because I’m a perfectionist. After every cake I find myself saying I could have done something better. I say to all new cake artist, you have to learn to walk your own journey. Don’t compare yourself to other artist, and don’t worry about the naysayers. Making various flavor cakes was a struggle as well in the beginning because you have to learn the science of baking. Once you learn that, you will be able to make any type of dessert.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kita Kakes – what should we know?
Kita Kakes was launched in February 2019. I specialize in custom buttercream cakes with fondant accents. I am known for providing delicious moist cakes and cupcakes. I am proud that my company is able to offer tasty moist cakes that the people can enjoy entirely. They don’t have to worry about the cake being overly sweet or the unpleasant take of fondant. What sets me apart from others is that I am able to create a vision in a cake for my customers and their guest if it’s an event will enjoy and continue to come back for more.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My kids motivate me to do what I do and to continue to keep striving for excellence. A very close friend of mine as well who does not let me slack in any way. My customers of course, positive or negative feedback it gives me the fuel I need to keep going.
