Meet Kyle Fink, Carli Acosta, Raven Nieto and Jake Karner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Fink, Carli Acosta, Raven Nieto, and Jake Karner.

Please kick things off for us – how does this story begin?
Kyle and Carli met on a total whim. This was about October of last year, Kyle was in the process of making another band with some friends after the dissolution of his long-running hardcore punk project when Carli’s name came up while brainstorming potential cool band members. Their first-time meeting was her coming over to his house to jam. That initial band idea never ended up happening, but Carli and Kyle felt the chemicals between them and kept meeting up. Eventually, Carli’s idea for a band called Palomino Blond came to the table, and after Kyle made Carli quit her job at Sushi Sake, they decided to go for it for real.

As far as the rhythm section goes, Carli was around Jake all the time because he’s her girlfriend’s younger brother, and he was an amazing drummer who had been in a million bands, so he was automatically in the loop. Raven, the bass player, fell out of the sky and into Kyle’s DM’s after hearing whispers around MDC Kendall campus that Carli and Kyle were making a band together. We all have lots of history together too! Raven booked us on all our first shows when we were 14 and 15, growing up playing the same parties, getting our sea legs. There’s a huge element of things coming full circle with this band, it’s crazy, but it’s also like, of course, we’re all in a band together now! The first band practice was in March, and once the fire was felt, we booked a million shows including an out-of-state tour.

Please tell us about your the band.
We’re a four-piece rock band that takes gooey dream pop, and abrasive indie rock, and channels it all through an energetic, goth sheen. There’s a HUGE appreciation for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 2000’s pop in this outfit, which definitely is going to leak its way into our output at some point (if it already hasn’t). All our individual tastes are really diversified: Carli loves current indie and 90’s alt. Kyle looks like he exclusively listens to Black Flag when really, he exclusively listens to Jack Johnson. Raven loves post-punk and anything Dischord Records. Jake is really into modern day psych. All those sensibilities turned out to be really ripe counterparts, as there’s a really potent middle ground we all meet at when it comes to Palomino Blond.

The main goal is to inspire, and show people that anything is possible. At age 8, that Green Day poster on your wall is magic. That Nirvana CD in your grandma’s Toyota Camry CD Player is magic. That’s exactly how we want to eventually make people feel.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The only struggles that have really popped up have to do with our time, and our geographic location. It’s hard to set aside massive amounts of free time for this project when we’re all students and have jobs. After going on tour though, we really reflected on the cons of being a touring rock band based out of Miami, FL. It takes 10 hours just to get out of state for us, and as a result, the Miami scene has almost zero involvement with the national DIY circuit. We’ll go to shows in Brooklyn and play shows in Austin, and the way things really operate in those circuits blows our minds. We love being from Miami, we even feel exotic whenever we tell people we’re from here, there are just some things we need to work around being based here!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
We have a self-produced demo up on all streaming sites, like Spotify, and Apple Music. We also sell merch on our Bandcamp! The biggest way you can support Palomino Blond, however, is by coming out to one of our shows and partying with us. The best way to keep up with that is by following us on any social media, we have so many shows, and they always get crazy. There’s something supremely special about meeting new friends through a mutual love of music and art (ESPECIALLY if it’s about YOUR music and art). It’s so rad and humbling. We have the most amazing supporters.
