Meet Kristel Martinez of Tickled Pink by Kris in Coral Gables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristel Martinez.

Kristel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The very first time I picked up a camera and captured an expecting mom, I was 19 and used a Kodak disposable camera. Not to worry, the subject was my sister… BUT! I do have to say. Those disposable cameras captured some mean silhouettes! Photography has always been valued in my family. Growing up, my mom was the one in front of the stage, taking all the pictures. She would even dress my sister and I alike and stage photoshoots. And yes, the turn out is definitely as embarrassing as it sounds. I knew this was what I wanted to do when I realized I could have fun, be creative, and provide my clients with incredible (and not so embarrassing) memories for their own families.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first started, I thought I would be a hobbyist. I had a job with a steady income and never in a million years dreamed of having a career in photography. Every step that I have taken has been because it was a natural progression. I kept my head down and learned and practiced every chance I got. As a mom to three small children, a wife to a restaurateur and having a full-time job, the chances didn’t come often but I loved it. It was my time for ME. In February of 2020, I received the keys to my very first studio. None of us could have predicted what this year would turn into but I will continue to do what I do best: focus on what can be done and press forward. I don’t believe the road to success is ever an easy one. But I think the difficulties are there to remind us of our grit and pose the question, “how hard will you fight to overcome these challenges?”

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am the owner and lead photographer at Tickled Pink. I’ve made a career out of telling families unique stories with my photographs. I specialize in maternity and newborn photography. Something about these two subjects makes my heart soar! I am a very odd person who finds newborns soothing (give me all the midnight feedings!), so when you see me work with them, I am happily in my element. A newborn session for me is therapeutic. You will often find me singing to them and rocking them to sleep.

My maternity sessions on the other hand, are a celebration of womanhood. I find so much joy in making my mothers feel amazing! Pregnancy can leave us feeling fatigued, tired, and unsure of our new bodies, so I am there to help them shine every step of the way. I take enormous pride in the service I provide to every client. Everything is intentional. I want my clients to feel comfortable and taken care of. I believe my attention to detail sets me apart whether it is in our initial exchange or the day of your session, in my editing, in my presentation, I’ve done it all with their full experience in mind.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely did not get here alone. I truly have the most incredible tribe. I don’t care what anyone else out there says, lol! I 100% would not have taken even the first step if not for my husband. He makes sure I stay out of my comfort zone, after all, that’s where dreams are made. My family, who allows me the peace of mind to chase my dreams because I know whatever my kids or I need they have our back. That part is crucial when the hours get long. My friends and loyal clients who have supported me throughout my journey. They don’t even care what I’m shooting. They always show up!

And of course, my mentors. I have had the incredible privilege of traveling around the country to learn hands-on from the leaders in my field Like Kelly Brown of Little Pieces Photography, Ana Brandt (the business name is the same) and most recently Vanessa Palmer of Captured by V and Co, along with countless hours spent picking the brains of others in the field like Olivia Trigo of One Up Designs by Olivia. I have the passion but they showed me what to do with it. I could never thank them enough for their time and generosity. I consider myself very fortunate to have been welcomed so kindly into this community.
