Today we’d like to introduce you to Kervyn Tejeda and Edwin Espinal.
Kervyn and Edwin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are long time best friends. We’ve known each other since middle school and we consider each other family.
Both our parents are Dominican immigrants who came here to give us a better life. We saw them struggle and sacrifice to give us a better life than they had. We were always searching for a way to provide financial stability for our families which is what motivated us to start Miami Hitches.
Before becoming entrepreneurs, we were college students working part-time at U-Haul as hitch mechanics. Edwin was following is mom’s footsteps in becoming a nurse and I was a recent graduate of the Art Institute with a bachelor’s in advertising. After many years of hard work, we decide it was time to venture out on our own. The idea of starting our own company was first, just that, an idea. It was something we brought up in conversation one day and didn’t pay much attention to. As the days passed the idea became a dream and later a goal.
I still remember the day we decide to start Miami Hitches. We had $200 in our pocket and a lot of excitement in our hearts. We didn’t know much about business but we we’re hungry and willing to put in the work. Little did we know that it takes more than $200 to start a business. With little resources and high determination, we bought a couple tools and asked my father to lend us his SUV. That was the beginning of our journey.
When we created Miami Hitches we wanted to serve a need in our community. As hitch mechanics we noticed the inconvenience of cost and time, so we set a goal to be the most cost effective while also offering the best service. Our mission is to turn our local business into a nationwide company and impact hundreds of lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road as not been easy at all. The first obstacle and probably one of the most difficult has been lack of funding. We didn’t have personal money to put into the company nor were any banks/ lenders eager to give us capital. All the money that we made we put back into the company. Weeks would go by without us getting paid. The road looked scary and at times too difficult to continue. To this day Edwin and I are the only employees at Miami Hitches therefore we must be the mechanics as well as receptionist, manager, promoter, accountant and boss. We made many mistakes along the way, but you won’t find us complaining about our situation. We embrace the challenge and we’ve learned a lot by stumbling over the obstacles in our way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Miami Hitches story. Tell us more about the business.

We are extremely proud of the feedback we get from our customers, not to mention the referrals they send and the repeat customers as well. We take great pride in offer premium customer service and that is reflected with our 5.0 star rating on Google.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We have high expectations for the next 5 years. The trailer hitch market has steadily increased over the last 10 years. Leasing vehicles has also become a more popular option therefore customers are reinstalling a hitch on their vehicle every 2-3 years. Personally, our company is undergoing a major website reconstruction allowing us to start selling online and reaching customers across the nation.
