Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Ferguson-Tarver.
Kayla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been natural my whole life and only started to appreciate and embrace it’s beauty a few years ago. When I started actually doing my hair, I would get lots of questions on what products I used and things I did to get my hair long and healthy. Because I spent so much time on YouTube watching tutorials, I decided to start making them and helping out girls with natural hair. My goal is to help convince as many people as possible their natural hair is amazing and beautiful and that managing natural hair is hard at first but it gets easier with time. I hope that’s what I’m doing. Getting packages and being asked to review things is cool but my channel is really about confidence. I was not confident about my hair or the way I looked at all a few years back and now nobody can tell me anything! Although confidence is a never-ending path I want to continue learning to be my most confident self and also help others do the same.
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth?! *soulja boy voice* not even close. First and foremost, fear and a lack of confidence made me doubt myself and kept me from even starting, I had the idea to start this channel way back. When I finally did start it college, work, and just life, in general, got in the way of me being consistent with it. Not seeing as much support as I thought I would also make me doubt that I should even be doing it. But I started to think “even if only a few people are inspired by my videos to go (or stay) natural, then I’m doing exactly what I set out to do.” Sometimes, I get ‘creators block’ and I can’t even think of what to upload and I think that and time management have been my two biggest challenges as of lately.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I make hair videos on YouTube. A very saturated community, but I’m very honest in my videos and I’m also good at making them short and to the point. I’ve been a hair model for The Mane Choice in the past and featured on very popular Instagram hair pages like @healthy_hair_journey @hairtuber @kinks2curls @afrocentrichair @blessedwithkurls and @kinkyhairrocks. We’re all different no matter how saturated a lane might be, so me being me already sets me apart from others, I am then only me (and same goes for everyone else). On my channel, I try to give a variety of content and quick in-depth videos and I try to teach something in every video so that there’s a purpose for everyone watching my content.
Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very active and playful, always had a few close group of friends, and appreciated my alone time when the time came. I tried a lot of different things growing up, I was a dancer, ran track, played the piano, dabbled in acting a little too. I was interested in everything it seemed like, I’ve always been willing to try something new.
