Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Oliveira Lisboa.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from Brazil. I moved to Atlanta about 17 years ago when I was 14 years old. After getting married, I thought about going to beauty school since in Brazil beauty has been refined into an art form and Brazilian women have been sharing and passing down their secrets for generations. It’s called ‘Brazilian wax’ for a reason, right? I always thought I could put my authenticity into my work and that this would make me different from everyone else.
My husband, Paulo De Souza was the very first person to give me an incentive to become an Esthetician and open up my own waxing salon. When everyone didn’t believe in me, he was always standing by my side with that future business vision.
After graduating from Esthetics School, I worked for a few years for a hair removal salon to get as much experience as I could. Years Later, we decided it was time to make things happen. We moved from Atlanta to Tampa where we didn’t know anybody. We left behind our family to go towards our American dream. Most of them said we were crazy, but we had a dream. We had in our heart that Tampa would be the perfect place to spread the Brazilian way of waxing.
We opened Beekini Wax after 1 month and a half of remodeling. What is so special about It, is that the remodeling was done by us and our family. We got our ideas together, and my mother designed a project for us which was built by my husband and my father in law. From the floors to the walls, to the painting, electric… The family came together more than ever to make it happen, and the feeling is very gratifying.
The first day we were opened we had 1 single client. There were days that I was there all day and nobody walked through those doors. I worked as a front desk receptionist and taking waxing clients for about more than 1 year working by myself.
Today we have a team of licensed estheticians that I have trained myself and looking into opening our second location first semester of 2018. Beekini Wax is truly a dream come true. Paulo and I have been working really hard to get our Brand out there. We are very grateful for what we have accomplished so far, and have faith that we can get further if we continue to dream together. We are a small business, family owned competing with nationally named salons, but we are number one on google with more than 200 5-star reviews. We’ve put all of our heart and love into this and we’ve been very blessed.

Waxing sometimes brings an uncomfortable feeling, but I find innovative ways to make clients feel more comfortable. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a client come in scared or nervous of the process and having them come back time-and-time again.
I believe that waxing is much more than removing unwanted hair. Is about making women feel confident and beautiful. Making them feel sexy and increase their self-esteem. I am all about making people feel special.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned before, we moved from Atlanta to Tampa where we didn’t know anybody. Me, my husband and our 7-year-old son. I was not always easy being away from family, especially on special occasions like birthdays and thanksgiving when we couldn’t make it back to Atlanta.
when we opened Beekini Wax, I used to work all day by myself as a receptionist and esthetician. There were some days we had no clients. After a few months we started building the clientele where I had to wax everyone, no break, no time to eat, so most of the days I was exhausted at the end of the day, but always kept on smiling.
