Meet Romy Jurado of Jurado & Farshchian in North Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Romy Jurado.

Romy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Lima, Peru. At 11 years old, my family decided to move to the United States. Moving to the United States meant separating from my grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunts who I was extremely closed to. Thankfully, I had my sister Janette Jurado with me, and we managed to get through everything together. Having to leave everything in Peru meant starting from zero. We were living in a small little efficiency and did not get to go to many places. My grandfather was an attorney and judge in Peru. He made me promised him that I would become an attorney. That meant having to learn English fast and focus on my studies. I was blessed that eventually my cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents moved to the USA and we lived close by. I started working at the age of 15 through work experience from high school. I did it to help my parents. I was fortunate to be selected to work in the legal department of Bacardi. That job opened up my eyes to the real possibility of becoming an attorney. For the first time, I met US attorneys and some of them were even Hispanic like me. Since then, I kept on working while going to school.

I started going to Florida International University for my undergraduate and then continued for law school. I got married at 21 and it was the best decision I ever made. I met my husband, Edward Quilca, at 11 years old. We are both Peruvian. He has shaped me into the person I am today. Going through law school was hard. However, having my husband unconditionally by my side helped me get successfully through law school. After law school, I started working as an attorney for different law firms. While I was happy working as an attorney, I felt something was missing. I needed to feel that I was building something that belonged to me. I wanted to set the rules and have a law firm that was both a happy and productive place. In 2013, I decided to join forces with my partner, Jennie Farshchian, and formed the law firm of Jurado & Farshchian, PL.

My law firm partner and I both are women who were born outside the US. In 2014, we also founded Marina Title because we saw the need for good reliable title closing services in Florida. While in law school, I adopted my first cat, Tommy. Since then I grew a passion for cats. My husband and I have three cats, Tommy, Monkey and Chanel and two dogs Foxy and Bobby. In 2016, my two-law school best friends, Diana Collazos and Meranda Reifschneider and I founded Cattorneys At Paw, a non-profit dedicated to raising money and awareness for the rescue, veterinary treatment, and general care of community cats. For the past three years, I have also been involved as the President of Club Amazonas USA, a non-profit that brings medical treatment and supplies to over 4,000 people in the neediest areas of the Peruvian Amazon every year.

Has it been a smooth road?
Having to start from zero in a new country without knowing the language and with very little economic resources was not easy.
