Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Rubinstein.
Julian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After college (1982), I worked for a Canadian company that sold plumbing supplies to retailers. I bought the US division in 2000 and subsequently sold it to Masco (NYSE:MAS). I then joined Sun Capital a Private Equity firm. In 2000, I left and started American Asset Management to manage my own money. I pulled out of the stock market right before the crash. Word spread about this move and I started gathering clients. I then started a daily radio show which I continue to do on a daily basis. My investment philosophy is based on Harry Browne’s work which he called the Permanent Portfolio. I currently manage over $220 million.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been basically a smooth ride as my clients were not hurt in the 2008 crash, as we had very little in the markets.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My aversion to risk and loss is what separates me. I use rules based investing and do not allow my emotions to enter into any investment decision. I am not afraid to go 100% to cash if necessary. Very few brokers would do this. They just ride the ups and downs which is foolish.
