JP, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It began in Colombia with my parents about 20 years ago, when they decided to participate in the flooring industry selling from wood to carpet and even some artificial Turf. When we moved to the Miami we decided to continue the company here. However, with a flood of competitors in carpet, wood and tile we decided to specialize in something different that was not so mainstream as of yet: Artificial Turf. I graduated high school and went from part-time in the business to full time dedicating everything to it. We did artificial Grass installations for a good 10 years and that’s what gave us the experience we have now.
We have shifted from an all service/installation company to strictly materials only/wholesale. We even offer free classes to installers to have the know-how of a professional installation and how it’s done. Over time we have decided to add other products to our line-up which can be categorized as beautifying products because that is our #1 goal and focus; beautifying the world around us with quality products and quality craftsmanship. We are Diamond Turf; Florida’s biggest artificial grass distribution company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. everybody sees the success now and think that its an overnight success company. I tell them it took us 20 years to build this “overnight” successful company. It’s been rough but you always need to remember just 1 thing. Business is a game. Have fun with it and enjoy it because there will be struggles. We’ve struggled with cash flow, inventory, credibility and everything else in between. The road is never smooth, your job as a business owner is to make it as smooth as possible.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Diamond Turf – what should we know?
We are DST Floridas Biggest synthetic grass wholesale company. We specialize in selling materials, hardware and accessories with everything that has to do with artificial grass, its installation and its maintenance. I JP have been in the industry for over 10 years and most of that time was installing artificial grass so even though I don’t know everything; I sure know a lot about the techniques and methods to do it professionally. I get hired as a consultant and travel even outside of the country to watch over a project and give consultation. This know-how and our friendly customer service is what sets us apart from our competition. We don’t even mind sharing all of this know-how with our clients for free because our goal is for the installations that are done using our products to be successfully installed project and the contractors know that and appreciate it and I think this is one of the reasons that our company has grown so big so fast. The biggest thing that we are proud of is that this is a family business where literally, the whole family is involved and we all compliment and take care of a specific department. It’s a true and ideal Family Team.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
– Think about the people and their growth, not your own.
– Doesn’t matter if they are buying $1, always treat clients as if they were buying $1M
– Believing in what we do
– Having flexibility with problem thinking skills and thinking outside the box.
– Always knowing that if there is a problem, that means that there is a solution.
