Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Hector.
Joshua, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For me, it all began when I was seven years old. I have a very close-knit family and within our family, there are a lot of musicians. Whether traditionally trained or self-taught, I was surrounded by music constantly. Also, being Grenadian, music is a huge part of my culture and the Caribbean culture as a whole. I initially began with the drums, I worked my behind off to perfect my skill and I worked diligently to really master the drums. My family really encouraged me to supported me and motivated me as I dove into learning everything there was to know about mastering the drums. Drums truly were my first love. That’s where it all began for me. From there, I was exposed to so much more. I was exposed to various genres of music outside of what was listened to within my home and as a result, my love and passion for music were born.
During my late teens, I went through the typical teenage phase, where you’re trying to dig deeper and really understand who you are, and the things going on around you. I internalized a lot and needed a release. I found that release through writing. I would write just to write at times and at other times, I would write poems. As time passed, I structured my work into songs and by 2013, I released my first single “Sweet Life,” as an Independent Artist at the age of 21. The song took off and I performed at various venues promoting “Sweet Life.” I was even interviewed by a pretty popular radio station in West Palm Beach; X 102.3
I’ve partnered with many South Florida artists leading up to 2018 when I released two more singles; “Make You Mine” and “Problems & Tensions.” Since the release of both singles, I’ve been performing consistently in the South Florida area, gracing stages all over with my island vibe twist.
Has it been a smooth road?
In my short career, I’ve faced many obstacles and challenges.
From not always receiving support from loved ones regarding being an artist, facing financial setbacks while fueling my dreams, to being my own manager and recording engineer. It’s a juggle while all attempting to live life and balance friends, work and relationships. I’m literally always on the go or working on something.
My road has been busy and hectic but it has taught me so much about life. It has groomed me into the determined artist, musician and just all around an individual that I am today.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I would say it’s a pretty even balance between being an artist and drummer as far as my talents. As far as the energy that I bring, I always try to wake the audience up and bring them to their feet. I enjoy rocking crowds and really allowing others to experience my culture. Even if just a hint of it is through my music. It’s just a feeling I can’t explain. I have had audiences that were dry before but literally come alive through my music.
It’s pretty ironic though, growing up, I was one of the timidest and shy kids you’d ever meet. I didn’t talk much, I was very soft-spoken and just beyond introverted. People who knew me as a kid are always shocked to see my transition. It’s been a journey, to say the least, and I’m proud of my growth, thus far. Looking forward to and taking advantage of everything life has to offer me.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
Hmmm… great question. A part of me feels like our city wouldn’t be a great place due to the saturation of artists already in the market here. But on the flip side, I never want to deter someone from starting or trying to get his or her foot in the door. You just have to go for it sometimes, regardless of where you’re located.
I do think our city can improve one supporting one another. I, at times, feel it’s every man for himself rather than working together to both make it. There’s room for everyone.
