Meet Joey and Eli Acevedo of Morty & Edna’s in Lake Placid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey and Eli Acevedo.

Joey and Eli, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
On February 2018, we went on a road trip to visit our family in Lake Placid, FL. We were told to try a local cafe while in the area. From the moment we walked in, we were in love. Everything we ever could want our own place to look and feel like was right in front of us. Saturday farmer’s markets, movie on the lawn, probably the friendliest people you can meet, a cafe that feels like your in grandma’s living room about to enjoy whatever yummy treat she puts in front of you… we couldn’t stop looking at every inch of the restaurant and just looking back at ourselves just smiling at how awesome this place is.

Almost to the date a year later, we receive a text message letting us know that the cafe is for sale. We met with the owner about two days later. Five months later, Morty & Edna’s came to be.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been an amazing experience. We opened on the same day as the caladium festival, which is the biggest event here in Highlands county. So we were thrown in the deep end from day one. Our guests praised us from day one and have been very kind to us on online review sites. Word of mouth is definitely our friend.

The quarantine hit us when we were breaking records sales-wise. Sales went down at approx 80%. We never closed and offered to go and family meals. Due to the outpour of support from our local community, we have been fortunate to continue to keep our doors open.

One other challenge we have had is our kitchen limitations. We are very limited in space and equipment. We’ve had to find ways to provide hot and fresh food to our guests without sacrificing flavor.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Morty & Edna’s – what should we know?
We offer breakfast and lunch from 7a-2p, Monday thru Saturday. He have a variety of baked goods and are specials driven. Our specials change daily as do most of our baked goods. We have become quite popular from our cakes and thick cut, candied bacon.

Our goal at Morty & Edna’s is to ensure that when you eat our food, you’re eating fresh, from scratch made in house food that is made with love and will leave you feeling as if you’re being hugged from the inside. We believe in recapturing that childhood memory with every bite you take. We keep our menu small, seasonal and pride ourselves in making sure that everyone has something they can enjoy on our menu without sacrificing quality or flavor. We only make a limited amount of food daily to ensure you are getting fresh and tasty food. We are proud to say that our items are fresh and that you will not find a microwave anywhere in our restaurant.
