Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Shraybman, Esq.
Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Becoming an attorney was never on my life’s to do list. I wanted to go to art school, but as a first-generation immigrant (born into a Russian Jewish family), my parents had a different vision. When I started at the University of Miami, I had no clue what academics I’d enjoy. I started freshman year pre-med, second semester I shifted to business, then to political science, then back to business, before finally landing back in Arts and Sciences, where I majored in Philosophy (mostly because I thought my classes would be full of bean bags and lava lamps. spoiler alert: they weren’t).
After graduating, and with a love for philosophical exploration, I applied for and was accepted to a Master’s program in California. A week before I was supposed to move, I decided to defer my admission for one year. When the next Fall rolled around, I deferred again. When I did this a third time, my parents all but begged (or commanded, depending on your perspective) me to “just study for this law school exam.” I resisted, but eventually gave in because I figured I had nothing to lose, and candidly, I enjoy studying.
Fast forward – I did well on the LSAT, got accepted to several South Florida schools, and ultimately chose to attend Florida International University’s College of Law. Still, with no real idea what I wanted to do, I mostly used law school as another opportunity to immerse myself in subjects I found interesting. In my three years, I focussed primarily on two topics: international human rights and entertainment/intellectual property. I knew that if ever I was going to actually practice law, it would be something related to business and art.
After graduating, I worked in capital punishment. It was a most impactful experience, and while I have the utmost respect for those who commit their lives to the work, the stakes were too high and the work weighed on me too heavily. So, I finally made the transition into what, I think, is what I am meant to do. After a three year stint with another small start-up focussed law firm, I opened Shraybman Law.
Today, Shraybman Law is an awesome boutique law firm focussed on exactly what I envisioned – Business and Intellectual Property. I started as a one-person show, and now we are a team of eight. From working with startup companies, established enterprises, and nonprofits, to representing artists and creatives, we are our clients’ trusted advisors and allies. Now, I get to spend my days collaborating with creative and inspiring people to help them grow their businesses and succeed wisely. Turns out, it’s pretty fun to be an attorney.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not! I’ve learned some hard lessons over the last few years. From having unmet expectations with a potential partner to losing a big client, it certainly hasn’t been perfect. That said, I remind myself it’s all part of business. I try not to take things personally, and keep focused on the positive and what’s important (like maintaining relationships, being reliable for my clients, and providing the highest quality legal counsel and service we can).
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.

Oh boy. Ask my mom? Probably contrarian, curious, and caring. (alliteration unintended).
