Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Perez.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell into the makeup industry by accident after graduating St. Thomas University with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a minor in color theory. I started to look for work after college and MAC was there and they welcomed me with open arms. Art was always involved in my life, as a painter from the age of 10, makeup came naturally. I started to work at a bridal store at the age of 14 preparing models for bridal fashion shows and exhibitions. I would do makeup on the models with one brush and eye shadow palette, it’s all history from there. MAC was a wonderful experience working at every single South Florida store as a freelancer and later to become a permanent artist at stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdales in Aventura mall. I’ve worked with the Real Housewives of Miami, Brooke Hogan, Spanish soap opera stars like William Levy, Pedro Moreno, and Olga Tanon. Later I stayed freelancing for MAC but joined the Giorgio Armani Makeup team at Saks 5th Ave in Bal Harbour, FL. At Saks, I am thankful to say I was the most sought-after artist in the cosmetics department, I did trunk shows for Christian Dior, Oscar de La Renta, Alice and Olivia, and Diane Von Furstenberg. After leaving Giorgio Armani, I joined Beauty Schools of America and taught makeup to skin care students and aspiring makeup artists, I worked there for several years and I was also a beauty ambassador for the school with makeup segments on NBC 6 and Fox TV. During that time, I continued to freelance with companies like Chanel, Makeup Forever, Private label companies, personal clients, weddings, personal makeup artist for Robin Thicke, and I was the lead artist for the Black tape project with Venge Media. She has also worked with Micheal Costello for Miami beach fashion week.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a rollercoaster to get to where I am now. Well worth every moment, I’ve learned a lot about human interaction, reading body language, storytelling, and how to really be patient. There are good and bad days, like any other job. Unfortunately, the beauty industry is also very cut throat, it seems like every other day there’s a new up and coming makeup artist that’s willing to do the work for less money but with less experience. I like many other veteran makeup artists stand our ground on prices, I am a firm believer that cheaper isn’t best and that’s what I give my customers, only the best.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Marked for Beauty – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in pinup Makeup, I love the entire esthetic of the ’40s and ’50s. Along with editorial photo shoots as well. I have also worked on several local films one of which won the 2017 Oniros Film Awards for Best Makeup. As much as I have enjoyed working runway shows and celebrity photo shoots, I am most proud of the volunteer work I do at the Nicklaus children’s hospital. I love seeing the kids smile when they dress up for their events. People are very quick to forget that kids undergoing treatment are still children that want to laugh, dance and play like all the other kids. Something so simple as having your makeup done and looking in the mirror and seeing a beautiful girl in a dress and not a sick, young girl battling cancer, is amazing. Those moments, time almost stands still when you see their faces light up and that is such an amazing reward that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Miami’s culture, the city, the art, the music, the beaches, and all the different types of people you can meet from all walks of life. I am just in love with this city, it pulses with life and flavor, it’s as invigorating as that first sip of Cuban coffee. Nowhere else have I found a city filled with such passion.
The traffic is what I like least, just like every native that grew up here. I hope one day to have a relationship that lasts as long as the Palmetto has been under construction …
