Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Lam.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Hong Kong, a small city known for its friendly diverse international crowd with a huge number of restaurants covering the city. I am always fascinated by how the food culture influences the people. I began working in restaurants in my youth and has always hoped that maybe one day I could have a restaurant of my own. But it wasn’t clear until I moved to Miami that I could turn my dream into reality.
Miami resembles my hometown in many ways, I fell in love almost instantly.
After graduating with a hospitality management degree from FIU. I started working full time at my Uncle’s Teppanyaki restaurant. Teppanyaki is something that truly connects people with food. From the showmanship of the entertaining chefs that brings laughter to the guests to the sizzling sound of the ingredients being cooked on the hibachi flat grill, I was totally in love with what I do!
My dream came true when I came across the chance to open my own restaurant. With the help of my sister – Trista, we created Green plate Asian bistro! We did everything from scratch, from the floor plan interior design to the plating of each food items and everything in between, we created everything from scratch with attention to details. Most of the décors in the restaurant were either designed or handmade by us. And our recipes were created with our own uniqueness in mind. You can get a feel of that personal touch when you come and dine with us.
At Green plate Asian bistro, we offer an array of modern Asian dishes and a creative sushi bar. Our goal is to introduce our guest to authentic Asian cuisine while offering dishes that we are familiar with. We want to offer an experience where we showcase our passion for food and people to our guests.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am lucky to say it was quite smooth and enjoyable. I am happy throughout our journey.
Green plate Asian bistro – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We offer a diverse menu composed of traditional recipes from Japan, China, Korea and Thailand. While using authentic recipes, we tend to add our own touches to our dishes. For example, our crunchy crab fried rice use two forms of rice to balance its texture creating the crunchy effect.
We also work with vendors that provide us with fresh and sustainable ingredients locally and overseas.
One thing I am most proud of is the teamwork I receive from my team. We work hard to test new items and create a seasonal menu for guests to try. People love it when every we roll out a tasting menu. We also love getting feedback from our guests and improve as we learn.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There isn’t really a single particular proudest moment, but rather it is the compliments we get from our guests that make me feel proud. The feeling of getting their approval and recognition after working so hard is absolutely the most satisfying feeling. It motivates me to work even harder.

I love Green Plate! Especially it’s interior and decors, bringing the dine in experience to another level. One of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. Been dining here since it’s opened.
