Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Katz.
Jay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have never been your classic medical professional. I studied philosophy, religion and art history as an undergraduate and never thought I would go to on to be a medical professional. After traveling the world, my love of animals drove me to veterinary school where I focused on both small animal medicine as well as wildlife and international work.
Coming from this background, I always worked a little differently and attacked the problems of veterinary medicine a little differently then my colleagues. After veterinary school, when I decided to stay in small animal medicine, I continued to look at how veterinary medicine was practiced and how I could improve it and bring my unique style to as many animals and clients as possible. After working full time for many hospitals including performing shelter work and high volume spay/neuter, I worked as a relief vet in dozens of hospitals, honing my skills and learning what worked and didn’t work for each clinic. Eventually, I was ready to put all I had learned into action and started Healthy Pets Veterinary Care.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting Healthy Pets has not been a smooth road. Early on, the financial struggle of starting a new business took it’s toll. Obtaining new clients as the “new kid on the block” has been a long and difficult process. We have an extremely high retention rate as people love us once they meet us, but getting people in the door is never easy. Those first few months were stressful but that only pushed me to be more creative in my approach.
I also find that the tension between our “big picture” ideas and the nitty gritty details or having a great veterinary hospital that we expect to be top notch in quality and care can also be difficult. I think we’ve done an excellent job in training our staff and showing them how we want things done and how it’s always in the patient’s best interest. Although, there have been bumps in the road, I think we do great medicine and are growing rapidly.

What sets us apart is the way we treat people and our very true love of animals. Even within the veterinary field I have always been made fun of for how much I love dogs. While other vets would hide in the office and away form clients, you could (and still can) always find me in the lobby petting the dogs and feeding them treats (regardless of whether or not they are coming to see me). This love of animals is evident in all we do – from our mission statement to our attitude towards clients. We truly believe pets are family and offering a better client experience then our competitors.
