Meet Jaime Seymour-Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Seymour-Newton.

Jaime, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started this journey when my daughter was three she got bitten by a dog in the face had 30 stitches on her lip, lost her front tooth and almost lost her eye. She was traumatized and could not be around dogs. We worked with her, therapy, and she started riding horses (she was so frightening around dogs but LOVED horses).

When Rachel, my daughter was eight years old. For her birthday party she wanted to raise money for the rescue and I was just starting out with my photography business and we decided to do a photoshoot at a local pet store and we were able to give the rescue 300 pounds of dog food and probably raised around $500. We started working a lot with this animal rescue and then started fostering dogs in our home. It was perfect as I photographed our fosters and helped the rescue find them homes through my photography.

We have probably fostered 30 to 40 dogs over the past few years. We had several pregnant mothers give birth in our home and had several litters of puppies. We would keep them for eight weeks, and I would photograph their progress and promote through social media and with the help of Paws4You Animal Rescue, all of the dogs we fostered through the years got adopted into great homes.

All the while I was photographing families and schools and donating my time to pet photography. I recently decided to follow my heart, which is continuing to work with animals, becoming a pet portrait photographer and continue to volunteer my time to photograph rescue dogs and cats.

Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest challenge was not getting attached to the dogs we fostered. My daughter taught me an amazing lesson, that if we don’t let go, we cannot help other dogs. The solution to that was staying in touch with most dogs we fostered through the years. I am known as aunt Jaime to most some still visit, I get holiday cards and I stay in touch with so many of the dog’s families.

Another challenge is having pet owners value the heirloom of a pet portrait I speak to so many people who say, “I wish I would have photographed my dog while she was alive”.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
