Meet Jaime Piña

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Piña.

Jaime, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a filmmaker specialized in feature film production, documentaries, music videos, art videos and television commercials. I started my career with a Paramount Pictures venture to produce movies that were location-driven in the Dominican Republic in 1975. Since then, I have worked in key positions in 14 feature films. My last feature Holy Beast premiered at the Berlin Film Festival 2018. I have been producing and directing music videos, documentaries, television commercials in-between feature film productions. I came to Miami in 1997 with La Casa Films N.Y. and made Miami home.

Currently, I am in post-production of a documentary about the Little Haiti Soccer Club for kids under 18 and a musical project about Las Hermanas Mirabal for which the U.N. declared No to Violence Against Women in their memory 20 years ago November 25.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Filmmaking is a passion, a way of living, an intricate world of experiences with super creative people all bonded together as in a battle to accomplish the film at hand. Challenges and obstacles are part of film production, but at the end of the day and years after each project is completed, we laugh about all the hardships and dramas. Our immediate obstacle is how will productions restructure to meet the new social distancing rules.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company is a production service company specializing in filming in the Caribbean and Southern Florida. We service the feature film productions, music videos, documentaries, and television commercials. What sets us apart is my reputation in the industry, having 40 years of experience and contacts all over the world in the production world.

What were you like growing up?
Until ten years of age, I lived in Dominican Republic, coming from an affluent family during the Trujillo Dictatorship. My father was a Civil Engineer that worked closely with the government and my GodFather was one of the men that Assassinated the Dictator in 1961. My life turned upside down as we went into exile in 1961 to New York City.

I grew up during the civil rights movement being a minority and at private schools in New York. This period from 1961 until 1966 was very challenging for me. In 1968 I declared myself a Hippie and adopted the American Dream Dream. Since very young, I had a calling to the arts and finally, in 1975, I started in the Film Industry. Since I can remember, I wake up happy and enjoy my day no matter the hardships at hand.
