Meet Irene Lummertz of Irene Lummertz Jewelry in Palm Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irene Lummertz.

Irene, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love of natural gemstones was inherited from my father, a gemologist in Brazil. From my mother, I inherited a knowledge and appreciation of fine art, design, and fashion. From my homeland of Brazil, I was blessed with an unparalleled source of raw materials – natural citrine, aquamarine, topaz and more, that only Brazil can offer.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Humanities, I traveled through Europe working at the major fashion centers of Milan and Paris. The beauty and fascination of Brazilian gemstones drew me back to Brazil where I specialize in jewelry design and see my original designs through to creation by employing some of the finest lapidaries in the country.

I personally choose the metals and precious and semi-precious stones to create my handmade pieces. Each piece is unique in design, but similar in their beauty and elegance. I am also a colored gemstone specialist from GIA (Gemological Institute of America).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The greatest challenge I face is parting with the pieces I have created. Each is so unique and have such vibrant personality. I believe every artist faces this challenge of giving away their creations. I find solace in sharing my artwork with the world and seeing it fashioned by my clients.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Irene Lummertz Jewelry – what should we know?
The area of Brazil that I call “home” has a vast amount of beautiful, natural gemstones. Now, these aren’t easy to find, extract, cut and polish — no, it takes a lot of literal digging, analyzing and determination to identify what will become a true beauty. This is what differentiates my line of jewelry from others.

I source the stones myself from small mines in the outreaches – far from the cities. I then take the “rough” to a workshop that I trust and have the rocks broken down; once we find a good stone, which is a very exciting moment, the cutter carefully polishes around it. It’s then given to another “bench worker” who refines the cuts until we see what can be used to create one of my original designs.

This is the procedure: I source the rock, have it cut down to the gemstone and then refine and then polish it. We collectively decide which stones will fit properly into the ring, bracelet, and necklace. My pieces go through a long design and creation process. My jewelry is created to speak to the client individually.

My original ‘Three-Stone Ring’ design anchors the collection. It is comprised of large baguettes of different stones cut into Emerald and brilliant shapes. Various stones in different shapes and sizes make up my necklaces, giving continuity to this trademark design. Pendant earrings with interchangeable combinations of stones can be worn intact with a ‘chandelier’ effect. Some stones can be detached for a simpler, more casual look. Necklaces and bracelets with enormous stones side-by-side round out the current collection.

I believe that my designs are timeless. While trends come and go, elegance remains. When styles come and go, beauty remains. I would rather have a client buy one piece and wear it forever than have a client come in looking for the latest trendy jewelry – we don’t carry it, I don’t make it. Our trend is eternity.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My father for teaching me the craft, my mother for teaching me the appreciation of art, my husband for the support and most of all my clients. I cherish my clients, they love my work and I love seeing them absolutely happy with my designs.
