Today we’d like to introduce you to Humberto Alvarez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My studies in film and television production at NYU led me to a career as a fashion and prop stylist for many years before landing a position as Gallery Director at a prominent New York antique shop. My love of aesthetics has remained constant and has carried me through all the different facets of my life.
I love all aspects of design, whether its fashion, interiors, architecture, objets d’art, or everyday product packaging. I have always had an appreciation for older objects and furniture. They have history and carry so much beauty, and at times have a wonderful story to tell us. In my latest venture, Rearview Modern, I am able to explore this fascination on a daily basis, with an ever-evolving collection of eclectic mid-century furniture, lighting, and fine objects.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Lol….No it hasn’t always been a smooth road! There have been many challenges along the way, but these are also opportunities for growth. One of my biggest challenges was learning to navigate from having a brick and mortar store to having a predominately online shop. The internet has created instant access for the masses. There are a lot of reproductions and knock-offs being made which in my opinion, is lowering the bar on design.
Knowing your client base and finding your niche, is what helps to set you apart from the competition. I can’t be all things to all people, and I’ve learned to make peace with that. I know that the client who shops at Rearview Modern is looking for that one special piece and has an appreciation for original and authentic mid-century modern design.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rearview Modern – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Rearview Modern, specializes in 20th-century furniture, lighting, and fine objects. Our collection focuses on luxury vintage items by prominent craftsmen and designers, with specific consideration to Mid-Century Modern and Post Modernist designs (1940’s – 1980’s). Our ever-changing collection includes items by Milo Baughman, Paul Evans, Karl Springer, Ib Kofod-Larsen, Marco Zanuso, Tommi Parzinger, Gaetano Sciolari, Lobmyer, Venini, Mazzega, Camer, amongst many others. We also curate pieces by unknown creators, which equally represent the best of Mid-Century design. We have a particular fondness for the striking lines and forms of the Italian 1950’s, the functionality and simplicity of the Scandinavian 1960’s, and the daring motifs of the American 1970’s. You can also find a great selection of handcrafted home furnishings in organic and exotic materials.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
After spending the past 20+ years in New York City, I am excited to be a local again and to return to my Miami roots. I plan on expanding my interior design and home staging services to greater South Florida and establishing a showroom location in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, or Palm Beach (TBD).
