Meet Harley Gartel of Salon Hair by Scott in Delray Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harley Gartel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always loved doing hair, that was my passion since I was a child. I would always cut up my barbies and color their hair with food coloring. While I was just finishing beauty school, I got a job at salon hair by Scott as a color assistant. Through the years, I worked my way up to now being head colorist and creative director. I started entering hair competitions in 2007. Then, in 2013, I placed 2nd place for best colorist in the United States. I placed top 5 in 2014, then, in 2015, I placed gold for the United States, then I was off to the world competition. I was competing against 32 counties. I ending up winning the world gold for creative colorist. Winning the Goldwell Color Zoom competition was so far one of the best highlights of my career. This past year, I entered NAHA and placed as a finalist for Hairstylist of the year 2019. I look at coloring hair as just another form of art.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Any journey is not complete without struggles. I mean that’s part of the process. With each photoshoot, I learned so much. The only way to grow is to learn from your mistakes and trying new things.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Salon Hair by Scott – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a senior hair colorist and creative director at Hair by Scott and company. I am in love with Goldwell hair color, as a hair artist that is my weapon of choice. I am most proud of my winning photo entry for the Goldwell color zoom competition. I love doing everyday wearable hair color on clients and photoshoot competition hair as well.

Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
‘It’s hard to beat someone who never gives up.” That is the truth. When the going gets tough, it’s the ones with the passion that stick to it. From every failure, I have learned something new. The combination of passion and determination has to lead me to where I am today.
