Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Arias.
Genesis, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had an interest in makeup since I was young. Before I started high school, I made my mom take me to buy drug store makeup for my first day of school. It wasn’t till after high school that I realized my passion for it though. I was attending Miami Dade College for about a semester or two and would find my self being bored and uninterested, which is when I then realized school was just not for me and I was just attending because it’s “what you should do” but I knew that’s not what I wanted.
All I knew for fact was that I wanted to do something that I loved. So I then started doing makeup on myself and my friends for fun. I also became obsessed with special effects makeup and I slowly but surely became better and better at it. After support from family and friends, I became confident enough to promote my work and take on clients, which then led me to create my Instagram and YouTube channel “Glam By Gen.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, life has its ups and downs. I wouldn’t call them struggles, just lessons learned. During hard times, I try to remain as focused as possible and work hard to be where I want to be. I’m just getting started though, Stay tuned for lashes and Merch coming soon!
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a self-taught makeup artist. I specialize in Glam Makeup but have a passion for special effects/gore makeup, Although I can’t do it year-round. I am proud myself for pushing myself when I didn’t have any clientele, I kept creating and promoting my brand and not giving up. I think what sets me apart from other makeup artists is before a client leaves my studio, I want to make sure they feel beautiful. The money doesn’t mean anything to me, what matters is how my client feels when they look in the mirror once I am finished. The feeling of making other people feel beautiful is indescribable.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I honestly feel like I make my own luck by working hard and staying focused on my goals.
