Meet Emily Fischer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Fischer.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Born and raised in Miami, I am an artist and educator. While studying fine art in Florida International University, I was surrounded by a community of artists and mentors who greatly helped me form ideas and major concepts of my work that I still use today.

Art has always been a continuous aspect of my life and has offered me a creative outlet to express myself and thoughts. It has been such an impact that it led me to a career in teaching high school art. Being an art teacher has allowed me to provide the same outlet to teens that was such a necessity for me, especially growing up. I believe that art is not only nourishing to one’s soul but is a vital source of development in one’s life.

Please tell us about your art.
My artwork focuses around the theme of the inner workings of our minds. The use of animals in my art is symbolic and notes our direct connection between animal and man.

Currently, I have begun a series of portraits that tap into natural phenomena and unexplained occurrences, varying from instances such as the cycle of life and death to physiological manifestations. I was very interested in the idea of civilizations believing that certain events such as a drought or disease would be delivered to them from a god out of punishment. Additionally, many also believed that protection from evil or the beginning of new life is stemmed from a higher power. I decided to create faces to these occurrences. These portraits are meant to embody a sense of “holiness” as they would have been worshiped by those who believed. The figures are displaying contemporary physical characteristics while paying homage to Renaissance style poses. I also like to add a bit of irony as well. For instance, in my painting “The Oracle,” she is a divine predictor of the future. But in her hand, she holds a small branch of Betel Nut, which is viewed as an addictive edible plant that causes rushes of high-like euphoria. One that chews the Betel Nut will have red stained teeth and lips. This leads to the question of whether the Oracle’s sight is miraculous or merely a side effect.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
While being recognized by notable establishments is wonderful, I feel that success is defined by how far you push your creative limits. Successful work is having the viewer understand your message while evoking feelings that they may or may not be comfortable with.
