Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Mendieta.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally from Union City, NJ, I have been living in Florida for more than 25 years. My passion for the arts started at a young age drawing and painting, as a teenager I began spray painting graffiti on abandoned buildings and walls. This opened my mine to urban art, the idea of scale and also the concept of public art. After learning more about the art history, I was also greatly influenced the Mexican muralist movement. Later working as graphic designer my interest in art expanded to include typography and design. In 2010 I had the opportunity to paint a large scale mural in downtown West Palm Beach which led to many more opportunities to paint murals for various cities, businesses and non-profit organizations throughout Florida and several other states. Now locally known as EMO for painting large-scale mural using primarily spray paint, this passion developed into a blend of raw urban art and graphic design that has become my signature style.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. In my 20’s I tried to show and sell my work at galleries but didn’t have much luck. At the age of 21, I had my first daughter Maya and I struggled to pay bills working many odd jobs from faux finishing to maintenance. We were eventually landed on are feet but wouldn’t have made it without help from our families.
Please tell us more about your art.
I’m an artist, I primarily paint large scale mural using spray paint but also paint smaller works on wood and canvas. Currently, I have work showing at Archive 79 gallery in Miami. I’m locally known as EMO for painting large-scale mural but I have been wanting to expand to sculptures and was recently awarded a commission to do so through the West Palm Beach Art in Public Places Committee and West Palm Beach CRA.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Miami and South Florida is a big part of the art scene. With Art Basel or Miami Art week here every year, you have the opportunity to meet and see works from new and established artists from all around the world. Also, the Wynwood Art District is a mecca in the street art and graffiti scene.
