Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Zorrilla.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from Venezuela but have been living in South Florida for over 20 years. Since I was young, I always wanted to be a computer science engineer, as I was passionate about connectivity and innovation through technology. I got my degree in computer science in 1980 at the Central University of Venezuela, then I completed a Specialization in Business Administration by 1989 also in Venezuela, and then I started a Ph.D. in Information Management in Scotland in 1990.
From the beginning, I was very involved with the National Science Foundation Council in Venezuela known as CONICIT, where I came aboard the project of building the first private (government) network connecting the science and technology labs and libraries of 14 academic and R&D institutions. Eventually even linking up to Princeton University’s similar US-based academic network, providing access to specialized databases and the capability to upload and share scientific papers. Four years later in 1990, I spearheaded the evolution of this network from private to public protocols, further opening it to more of the community. It was the start of the Internet era in the country.
I designed a similar network for Ecuador under the International Development Bank (IDB) initiative for a similar institution named CONACYT. This experience launched my international consulting career as a technology expert and systems integrator. After Venezuela, I lived in Mexico creating more advanced and secure networks for private corporations, eventually moving to the United States where I worked in information security practice for the next ten years. Unisys and Internet Security Systems –ISS- were very important corporations at the time where I worked during that decade.
In 2002, I became a part of the growing movement to modernize electoral systems under the mission to protect citizens, protect their votes, and impact democracy. I spent over 12 years in the internationalization of new elections systems servicing societies across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. My motivation was always about using technology to impact communities in positive ways, and this has largely defined the steps I take in my career. My job has been about impacting developing countries by applying technologies for the best of the people. And despite the leaps and bound innovation is taking in shaping communities around the world, I have found that in the U.S. and particularly in Florida, very particular pains that can be solved with technology have been left underserviced.
I created ReaXium to address these pains and bring all that I’ve learned about connectivity, information security, and impactful innovation to my backyard as they say. ReaXium harnesses cloud-based technology, software solutions and mobile biometric devices to service distinct Florida markets, such as the school system and private communities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s not been a smooth road — rarely ever is when it comes to technology. By nature, innovation goes hand in hand with resistance or skepticism. I know how much the world has changed thanks to technology in the time I’ve been working, so I believe despite the struggles to introduce and embrace new technologies, servicing different markets with these innovative technologies is the way to make them mainstream. Bringing biometrics and increased connectivity into communities empowers the security of these markets.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about ReaXium – what should we know?
ReaXium is a cloud-based application and managed service provider in the mobile biometrics market. Our innovative solutions combine technology, mobility, security, and connectivity to solve the problems of today. From helping schools identify who’s who on the bus or in their classes to giving communities better control of their residents’ or visitors’ violations, ReaXium has been constantly innovating to ease the pains of our clients’ everyday lives.
We specialize in building highly customized solutions. Be it for a school, company, or community, we know what it takes to provide a comprehensive system of registration, authentication, notifications, and reporting. Currently, we are most known for our School Suite & Mobile Citation solutions.
ReaXium School Suite gives schools and families an end-to-end look at the ridership & attendance of their students. Students check in on our mobile devices onboard, at school and in class, keeping administrators and families connected to the school day.
For communities, we’ve developed ReaXium Mobile Citation to optimize the way private or public security forces and their officers or staff issue, manage and collect payment from citations. By streamlining citation practices, we’re giving HOAs and POAs a better control of their community.
What sets us apart from others is our commitment to developing the most comprehensive solutions for your needs. No matter the market, we believe our devices, software, and service can improve your daily operations. Embrace the cloud, embrace biometrics, and embrace the future. Implement these solutions today, for a more secure and efficient tomorrow.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
At the beginning of my career, I had very strong mentors like Dr. Larry Landweber (Internet Hall of Fame, University of Wisconsin – Madison). He has been one of the most inspiring people in my career. He developed my understanding of the Internet and the near future of the Internet at that time. He instilled in me a love of technology and innovation that I look for cultivated in my team today. From my personal life, I would like to recognize my family support and unconditional love as well as someone I consider to be my guru who showed me the value of human beings, as well as their process of becoming better and better all the time. Finally, I’d like to recognize all of my younger mentees who have strived for innovation in their own sectors through technology. Despite being a leader in my industry and business, I believe a team environment is vital to success. Working with younger teams keeps you open to innovation, new ideas, creative strategies and more. From a CEO point of view, my team is invaluable to the strong position of ReaXium in providing the best solutions and services to the vertical markets we work with.
