Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sunny Khachatryan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Khachatryan. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Doctor in Family Therapy, a Certified Addiction Professional, and a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist.
I received my Ph.D. in Family Therapy at Nova Southeastern University, my Master’s degree in counseling specialization in Marital, Couple, Family Counseling and Mental Health Counseling from Barry University, and my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from San Diego State University.
My clinical experience includes working with the substance abuse population in residential settings and intensive outpatient settings providing individual, family, and couples therapy.
I focus on working with adults and adolescents with substance abuse disorders and mental health disorders. I have experience working with Native Americans from the Seminole Tribe of Florida. I also have experience working with severely emotionally disturbed children and children with autism.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been several challenges however they were all part of the growth process within the field. I have dealt with challenging clients who were my best teachers. As far as the academic aspect, it was not easy. However, it allowed me to grow not only as a professional but also at a personal level.
Healing Hearts Therapy Center Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My goal is to help my clients to replace unhealthy coping skills, encourage a healthy sense of self, and promote a lifestyle full of satisfying relationships & experiences. My treatment approach is collaborative and relational working with clients to discover the most helpful ways to discuss and solve their problems. I help clients rediscover their strengths, gain insight and achieve healthy lasting changes. I specialize in substance abuse and mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, etc. I am most proud of having my own private practice and guiding individuals to make life-changing decisions. I not only provide counseling in an office setting but outdoors as well, based on a client’s preference. Some clients feel closer to the Mother Nature or in home settings. I like to connect with my clients based on their comfort level of wanting to open up in a therapeutic interaction.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Achieving my Ph.D. by completing a dissertation with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Having the opportunity to work with Native Americans was an incredible experience. I developed a depth of mindfulness in regards to not to the tribe, but to the world of counseling.
