Meet Dr. Alejandro Badia of Badia Hand to Shoulder Center in Doral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Alejandro Badia.

Dr. Badia is an internationally respected hand and upper extremity surgeon, and is the founder of Badia Hand to Shoulder Center in Doral, Florida. He graduated from Cornell University and completed his medical degree at NYU. He served as the worldwide president of ISSPORTH and co-founded the globally recognized Miami Anatomical Research and Training Center (M.A.R.C.) and The Surgery Center at Doral, an elite state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center.

After years of a successful medical career and a prestigious speaking legacy, he saw a need for specialized orthopedic urgent care centers to efficiently assess and treat a range of orthopedic and sports injuries and founded OrthoNOW®, the nation’s only orthopedic urgent care franchise. Each OrthoNOW® has a team of orthopedic specialists on staff that treat broken bones, sprains, torn ligaments and muscles, cuts, sports and workers compensation injuries.

Dr. Alejandro Badia comes from a family of physicians and is a descendant of the founder of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. Badia was inspired to become a surgeon to help care for people like his grandmother who suffered from chronic pain due to her advanced arthritis.

At Badia Hand to Shoulder Center, Dr. Badia’s patients have direct access to digital radiographs, MRI imaging, physical and occupational therapy and the most technologically advanced operating rooms available. Virtually all problems related to the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder regions are handled at the facility.

Badia is also the co-founder of the Surgery Center at Doral, an ambulatory surgery center with multiple sub-specialists, who together manage all musculoskeletal problems, covering the full scope of orthopedic care in one facility. Any orthopedic condition not covered at Badia Hand to Shoulder Center is referred to the proper orthopedic sub-specialist in the group.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As everything in life, there have been times where we’ve faced hurdles; however, we pride ourselves on the fact that we’ve overcome many of the obstacles along the way. Our journey hasn’t been easy, yet it has been so incredibly rewarding. We are treating people and restoring their function and that is what makes us get out of bed every day.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Badia Hand to Shoulder Center (BHSC) is a premiere orthopedic private practice specialized in the upper extremity. We treat many international patients who visit Miami for medical tourism, seeking the best quality and care for their conditions. BHSC is also an early adapter of consumer-based technology. We introduced Telemedicine services into our practice last year and it has been a terrific incorporation given that many of our patients live abroad. We use Telemedicine specifically for those initial consultations, second opinions and follow ups.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was very curious and determined. I saw firsthand how my grandmother suffered from advanced arthritis, which really set the stage for everything I have worked for; I knew that I wanted to help people like her, and I’m humbled to say that I get to do it every day.

I read the book “The Making of a Surgeon” at age 11, which recounts William A. Nolen’s surgical training at Bellevue Hospital. Little did I know then, that same hospital was also going to train me to be a surgeon. If there’s something to take out of this, it’s to never lose sight of what you want nor the passions you have even as a child.
