Meet DJ Koolie of Koolie’s Island Kuisine in Sunrise (Broward County)

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Koolie.

Thanks for sharing your story with us DJ. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started off being a DJ/Entertainer primarily in due to that my family’s always been in the nightlife industry from owning a predominantly Caribbean night club called Little Pub for over 20+ years. So in due to that and the culture, being of Jamaican decent, we incorporated our family recipes in the dishes being served at the venue. Being raised in South Florida, and being able to travel frequently & abroad through my current endeavors, I’ve meet an abundance of people who’s advise I’ve accumulated those perspectives into my decision making. Realizing my talents as an entrepreneur, I quickly realized we could still brand ourselves with our food & culture in this generation.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Necessarily I could say from an overall perspective it was an easy road, but only because not only myself but others have already gone threw the big mistakes and threw observing and making the proper adjustments in planning you can account for most issues.

Please tell us about Koolie’s Island Kuisine.
My family catering business vends at various events, festivals, & private contracts throughout the South Florida region selling the best in authentic Caribbean “Kuisine”. We are most known for being at various events ranging from Miami-Broward Carnival, Rolling Loud, RipTide Music Festival & More. Our menu consists of Jerk Chicken, pork, curry chicken, oxtails, fried snapper, & more. We tend to be one of the only Caribbean vendors at some of these events and providing authentic family recipes really hits with our crowd and have a plethora of return customers even on the same day. As a business we strive on consistency, cleanliness, & most of all flavor. Within every bite you can taste the passion all the way down to the last grain of rice. I’m proud to say we’ve made great impressions with some of these major brands to be welcome to serve again every year after the reviews & compliments brought back to event coordinators. We treat people the way we treat our customers, with care & compassion, and that’s all you can ask for.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over right now in this time of my life, I would refine some aspects to be more efficient but that’s due to already knowing the pros & cons ahead of time if I failed, which would be the only reason to starting over.
