Meet Dionne Hook of MyLee Events in Lauderhill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionne Hook.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dionne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica but grew up in beautiful Portmore, Jamaica. At 14, I migrated to Fort Lauderdale with my family where I graduated high school two years later.

I’ve always had the creative bug. Growing up in Portmore, I would make gift baskets, design rooms and plan small family gatherings. I even helped out in our family’s small printing business.

In 2014, I began making custom letters and party supplies after being placed on bed rest due to a difficult pregnancy. My work had started being noticed and soon, I decided that doing props just wasn’t enough. I wanted to use my client’s vision, with my innovation to create PERFECTLY PLANNED events!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, actually quite the opposite. Having a small business is rather difficult. It’s hard to get your work out there and get people to take you seriously. When you start, there are LOTS of mistakes that you actually make. For example, learning how to say no. Just starting out I did a lot of work for clients who underpaid and took advantage. I had to figure out ways to set boundaries so my client and myself could be equally satisfied. Another thing that was hard for me too is recognizing that even though my company is small, we can still provide the best options for our clients (i.e. I had a lot of doubts but I overcame them when I started to take myself and my company seriously).

Please tell us about MyLee Events.
At MyLee Events, we are a full-service Wedding and Event Planning Company. We also make decorations, rent party props and provide services (balloon decor, staff, etc.).

We specialize in small intimate events that cater to 50 people or less. However, we do accept events of any size.

We are known for our innovation and style as well as how we treat our clients like FAMILY!

What am I most proud of? Everything we’ve accomplished. Most times, when I mention our company, I get “ohhh, I follow you on social media” lol, but my proudest moments are being able to give back. For the past couple of years, we’ve gifted two graduation dinners & baby showers to those who couldn’t afford it. Suffice to say, they are now some of my BEST clients and we’re EXTREMELY appreciative of them.

What sets us apart from others? We care about each and EVERY CLIENT! Our customer service is our NUMBER ONE PRIORITY and we make sure our clients KNOW IT!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, the only thing I would change is having a concise plan from the get-go. Everything was a ‘learn as you go’ scenario simply because we grew so fast.
