Today we’d like to introduce you to DeShayla Denson.
DeShayla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the owner of ShayDee Beauty Co., Lux10 Hair Collection, and Let’s Talk Glam Collection, based here in Miami, Florida. I’ve always been into beauty and wanting to look good. I’m the youngest of three girls raised by a single mom, so there was no way I would be anything other than girly. Watching my mom and sisters doing their makeup and hair, I was always interested in knowing more about it. My mom was very open to letting my sisters and I express ourselves, whether it be through beauty, fashion, performing arts, you name it, so we were always exploring in creative ways. ShayDee Beauty Co. started as ShayDee Customz, where I was just customizing items such as hats, backpacks, and fanny packs. But when I expanded my products and services to wigs, hair, accessories, and cosmetics, I rebranded with a new name and new look, because I knew I wanted to really start to take this entrepreneurship thing serious.
The name ShayDee Beauty Co. came pretty naturally because I knew I wanted to be the face of my brand, so I would name it after myself ‘ShayDee,’ which comes from my personal Instagram name @heyimshaydee and it involved something I love dearly, beauty. My first time doing my own frontal, getting positive feedback and questions about if I did hair or just telling me how good it looked, I never knew it would blossom into a passion of mine, let alone a business. I kept researching and learning about my industry from types and origins of hair and laces, to making wigs and learning about the different types of wigs, learning about different techniques to make wigs, truly becoming a student to my craft. I use my day job to fund my dream job — to be my own boss. I am truly grateful that God put it on my heart to take this seriously. For the last year or so, I’ve been working on this rebrand, and I’m so excited to show the world all that ShayDee Beauty Co. has in store.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh, it has definitely not been a smooth road. Social media has a way of tricking people into thinking that entrepreneurship is easy when that is not the case. It has its ups and downs and often makes you feel like you want to give up, however, I have promised myself that I would give this business my all and keep pushing. When you feel like everything is going wrong and you’re at your withsend, you have to ‘Let Go and Let God.’ There has been many instances, where I felt that I wanted to give up, whether it was because I wasn’t getting sales, I felt that I wasn’t being supported by the people closest to me, contemplating my worth in regards to pricing my products and services, even when others in my industry were inspired by creative marketing and branding concepts without crediting. But through it all, I continue to persevere, because I never break a promise, especially promises to myself. I want to use my struggles to motivate me to ‘keep on, keeping on,’ as my mom would say.

My company specializes in custom glueless wig units, but I also provide luxury virgin hair extensions (Lux10 Hair Collection), accessories, such as sunglasses and hairpins, and cosmetics (Let’s Talk Glam Collection). I am most proud of my growth as a business owner, continuing to obtain all the knowledge that I can about my industry, which allows me to provide quality customer service to every client and customer. What sets ShayDee Beauty Co. apart is that it’s not just a beauty brand, it’s a lifestyle. ShayDee Beauty Co. is a marketplace for the Fierce, Fascinating, and Fun! My brand is all about catering to the everyday woman that likes to live a glamorous lifestyle without breaking the bank. I also pride myself on being professional, yet personable. I want my clients and customers to feel like I’m their homegirl, not just a company they’re giving money to.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was into everything. As a single mother, my mom had my sisters and I in any activity we wanted to do. We went to a performing arts camp as kids, I sang, danced, played instruments, stepped, I baton twirled from the age of six, all the way through high school and even coached for a while, and much more. Doing all these things, I was far from shy. I was a very outgoing and being the baby of my siblings loved attention naturally. I was really into all things girly and creative, hair, beauty, crafting, fashion, you name it.
