Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennard Mitchell.
Dennard, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Everything started for me straight out of high school. I moved from Miami, Florida to Decatur, Georgia back in 2000. In enrolled into Gupton Jones College of funeral services. A couple of years after I graduated and received my degree in mortuary science, I moved back to South Florida where I started practicing as an intern funeral director and embalmer. While working at the funeral home life took a major shift for me. I noticed a trend started happening instead of elderly people coming to the funeral home I noticed that there was a trend of younger people dying and I remember feeling helpless and wanting to do something. This urge stays with me for a while until I remembered at that exact moment that I would do much better actually helping outside of the funeral home.
And at that moment, that’s when I made a decision that I was going to leave my career and pursue being an inspirational and motivational speaker. At that time, I focused primarily on the Youth market so I would go into middle schools and high schools and share my story of how I grew up to help Student make the right choices in life. I’m speaking career evolved to the college market where I would provide different success and leadership programs for students. Today, I’m focused on helping organizations and individuals reach their next level in life. This is accomplished by keynote seminars, workshops, coaching, and publishing.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road but worth it. Everything that has happened to me, I use it to inspire others. Depending on where I’m speaking and my audience, I could share a number of obstacles that made me who I am. Such as: My parents divorcing when I was five and what that felt like. Watching my stepdad and mom physically abuse each other. Dealing with my mom and stepdad substance abuse problems. Becoming a father at the age of 17. Dealing with extreme stress and depression as a young adult and having suicidal thoughts. To working in the funeral industry and around so much death.
