Meet Delphine Dauphin of Joy’s Yummy Cupcakes by Delphine in Miramar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delphine Dauphin.

Delphine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story is pretty interesting. It was not as easy to start. I had to do a lot of convincing. I knew that I wanted to create because I like having the freedom to create things my own way. On my way to a financial literacy workshop, I pleaded with my mother for a chance to start my own business. She kept saying that I was too young. Okay, I understand that because I was only seven but I was not going to give up. After the workshop, my mother learned that it was okay to allow the child to start a venture. I asked my Mommy one last time and she agreed under the condition that my grades will stay the same and that I can operate my business on weekends only. She gave me a $5 small loan to get my ingredients and told me to go out there and be great. I did better than great. I got to work. I started my cupcake gig right away. I turned the $5 loan into $27 in less than 1 hour. Then, I turned the gig into a company in less than three months and now, I am being interviewed by VoyageMiami.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been some obstacles in which I elaborate on my second book The Science behind by Delphine Dauphin. There are three things that make the journey a little bit harder but it’s really beyond my control. First, my age- People look at me like it’s a game until they actually see me at work. They don’t expect a nine-year-old to control and manage a company. Well, I have full control over my company and it’s really disheartening when I am constantly being placed in a position to prove myself. For example, they will ask my mother some questions about the company and not me. It’s a great thing that she always refers them back to me. Second, Price – Some people expect again my price should be based on my age. Well, I am not selling my age, I am selling quality. These cupcakes are out of this world yummy. Once you have, I guarantee you that you will want more. So, my price is based on the quality of my cupcake. Third, Friendship – I have not changed and I plan to be even sweeter than I am now. For some reasons, I have lost a few friends. Now, my friends are becoming more and more kids that are also entrepreneurs. I have a strong support system and great mentors that guide me on how to deal with things emotionally and physically.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There are many like participating at Miami Gardens Wine and food, Receiving awards, Meeting great people but my proudest moment has been taking the stage at a presenting author of Miami Book Fair 2017. I have been attending this fair since I was just a few months old. So, being part of it with the same title as Former Presidents Obama and Bush, and Danticat, MJ Fievre, I am still amazed. I wonder if I am not the youngest presenting published author of the Miami Book Fair.
