Today we’d like to introduce you to Dafna Gauthier.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working for the government in Organizational Development in the Human Resources Department. I found that I enjoyed what I was doing, so I took it upon myself to take on more training classes and workshops to learn more about my job. After working in this field for many years helping business leaders and departments within the organization, I decided to take this on full time and started my own company Mindsets Consulting & Training. Now, I help both small and large companies develop their own dreams of running and owning a business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own company is never a smooth transition. Finding clients (marketing) and finances were the two biggest challenges I had. Startup cost can be challenging, so I started out of my home to keep the cost down. I met clients in their environment since I did not have an actual office. It worked out because most clients preferred it that way, and I was able to interview them in their own setting. This allowed me to get the lay of the land of their business and help them come up with ideas for their business. The other huge obstacle was marketing. Marketing is a big piece, so I worked on word of mouth with my clients to gain new clients. I did do some advertising but found word of mouth by referrals worked better for me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mindsets Consulting and Training – what should we know?
The work I do is human resource work and organizational development. My biggest love is helping start-up companies by creating business plans then coaching business owners behind the scenes. From there, I become their human resources person guiding them through the labor laws as they manage their employees. Most owners or managers spend time managing employees and are not familiar with most of the labor laws. One of the reasons for that is because labor laws are constantly changing and managers are not aware of the changes. Most likely it is because they are trying to manage the functional part of their business (their specialty of why they are in the business, i.e. retail sales), so they do not have time to learn or keep up with the laws changing.
I think what sets me apart from others is my personal connection with my clients. I take the time to hear them and help them achieve goals they did not know was possible. I have also helped them in managing their employees which have been a huge help to most of them.
Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
My luck role is having wonderful clients. I feel working with each client has been a privilege as they have honored me with trusting my company with their hopes and dreams. This has been the good luck of the business to me. In my life, the challenge is sometimes keeping up.
