Today we’d like to introduce you to Courteney Nguyen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Courteney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It has been a lifelong dream of mine to have my own nail salon/ business since starting in the beauty industry at age 22. I know it sound so ordinary but I’ve always wanted to work for myself and be acknowledged as a great business woman. My parents immigrated to the United States after the Vietnam War in the early 1980s, they didn’t start in the Nail salon industry right away. They would work in odd assembly line factories and Chinese restaurant until they could afford to go back to school to learn English and get a licensed traded. Back then in the early 1990s, the Nail Salon industry was just booming and a lot of the Vietnamese immigrants gravitate to the industry because it was less school and easier to obtain the trade licensing. My parents were among the many, they worked for other nail salon owners many years and finally in 1994, had the opportunity to open a salon of their own. Since opening their own Nail salons, I’ve been exposed to that industry for 20+ years.
About 2 years ago my parents sold all 3 locations, and decided to go into retirement. I saw the opportunity for them to invest in my dream, so I approach my parents with a business proposition to invest in opening a Nail Salon of my own. It took a lot of convincing and a great business plan for them to agree in a huge investment, but it worked. Posh Nails opened its doors Jan. 2, 2017, about six months ago. I’m happy to say that we are doing pretty well for a new Nail Salon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most challenging aspect of the business is trying to set your nail salon apart from any other nail salon on the street. Let’s face it, there are many Nail salons within the ½ mile radius or less where you are. They all offer the same services and sometimes the same décor or floor plans. So what are you going to offer or provide that will get you notice and be different from other salon to customers……? To answer this question, you would establish your salon business with excellent customer service, well qualified nail technicians, and good quality products. All three factors make your business stand out from others. I kept that question in mind throughout the planning and development of my business, (what set your business apart from everyone else?). Other minor challenges, hiring and keeping a full staff in operations at all times. In our nail industry, there’s a big turn over in staffing, so it’s very difficult nowadays to have a good working staff stay with your establishment for more than 3 years.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is remembering the quiet summer days listening to 80s music.
