Meet Carolina Medeiros of Kone Sushi in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Medeiros.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came to the USA in the end of 2008 with the idea of opening a fusion sushi restaurant with a Brazilian twist. In September 2009 my brother and I opened Kone Sushi in Miami Beach. After 4 years, in January 2015, we moved to Downtown Miami where we are currently located. Kone Sushi is a modern and cool sushi restaurant with a Japanese and Brazilian fusion cuisine.

The biggest Japanese community outside of Japan is in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Sushi is very popular in Brazil. That’s why I came up with the idea of opening a fusion sushi restaurant in Miami, to show the Brazilian way of eating sushi. We are very known for our corporate and private caterings with years of know-how. We serve the Ultra Music Festival VIP area for the 7th consecutive year and were the Oficial Sushi provider of American Airlines Arena VIP and Miami Heat. Our mission is to provide to our costumers a unique experience with a fresh and savory fusion food in a modern environment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t easy at all. It’s difficult to open and run a business, especially in a different country, with different cultures and laws.

We went through a lot of challenges on the way to here as changing the concept and moving to a different location of the store…

But fortunately everything went well and we could pass through everything smoothly.

Kone Sushi – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Kone Sushi is doing business in Miami for 7 years now. We are known for our fusion menu, friendly environment, Brazilian, and the world has known celebrities costumers and for the big events that we do catering. It’s not easy for a foreign founder’s company to succeed outside of their country, in the USA. And we believe that we made it with our persistence and love for what we do. For sure this sets us apart from others.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
7 years of business in Miami and to be the Official sushi provider of American Airlines Arena and Miami Heat.
