Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigitte Lu.
Brigitte, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Brigitte Lu and I am the designer of the Blu Crochet brand. I’m 29 years old and I started my online store a year ago in Mexico after having an interesting conversation with a friend who pushed me to follow my passion for fashion. Since that moment I’ve been focused on what I’ve been dreaming to be for years, a fashion designer. I realized that my life was in a monotonous routine, spending more money than I was saving, and living day to day without any future goals. My family always said that I’m like a grasshopper because I never stayed long in one place. I decided that I need a change in my life.
I’ve been working since I was 18 years old in many different jobs, but I have never worked as hard as I’ve worked more than this past year to achieve my dream for my future. Blu Crochet is not only a business that I made, it’s also my personal project. I’ve had so many doors close in my face many times in my life but each one has made me stronger and more determined to never give up in this journey. Also let us not forget that for every door that closes another one opens.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This past year was the most important and difficult year of my short 29 years of life. I’ve had to sacrifice my many things like moving out of Miami to work hard and save money, leaving behind my friends and family in New Jersey, left my social life, stopped supporting negative people and maintain focus, lost money, etc. Basically, all changes need to take you out of your comfort zone.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Blu Crochet is a creative brand that produces unique handmade swimsuit crocheting. My mission is to create refreshing, artisanal pieces to fit every kind of body. These suits are inspired by my culture from Huánuco-Peru where they are knitted by hand by women in the prison there who want new opportunities and show that there can always be a new beginning. It’s my pleasure to give them that opportunity to work to create not only a different kind of swimsuit but to send the message that it’s never too late to turn your life around. I’ve already participated in four fashion shows in the last eight months and as well as Fashion Week USA in Peru. This year I will be showing my collection in some other fashion shows and I am super excited to be in Miami Fashion Week 2020.
What were you like growing up?
I was born and grew up in a little town in Huánuco-Peru with my Grandmother, she was seamstress, so I remember that she always made my dresses and clothes when I was a child. When I was 15 years old, I started modeling in my little city but because I hate comfort zones I decided to move to the United States of America where I continued modeling in New Jersey. I went to school and later graduated as a Medical Assistant, but it was never my passion. My grandmother used to say me “To archive your goals, you have to learn to do everything” so that’s what I’ve been doing. I learned how to knit, how to take/edit professional photos, how to create a website, and how to create my own logo. I’m eternally thankful for my grandmother for making me the person who I am today. I never needed a man as a father figure in my life and that’s probably what’s made me such an independent woman today.
