Meet Atchana and Steve Capellini of Atchana’s Homegrown Thai in Coconut Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Atchana and  Steve Capellini.

Atchana and Steve met on Commodore Plaza in Coconut Grove in the 1980s, and got married in the 90s. In January 2017 they returned to their Coconut Grove roots and opened Atchana’s Homegrown Thai on the corner of the very same street. Atchana brings multi-generational expertise in Thai cuisine from her family’s famous Siam Lotus Room (the green Thai restaurant on US1 in South Miami). The new location is down-home and rustic, with local brews and Singha Thai beer on tap and a good selection of wines. All the old favorite menu items are here, such as Pad Thai, vegetarian egg rolls and crispy duck. This is as much Atchana’s home as it is a restaurant, and patrons are treated like family. Many of the ingredients she uses are sourced from the farm of family friends in Homestead, and Steve is often behind the bar or in the kitchen brewing up a fresh batch Mango-Ratcha hot sauce.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Construction in Miami is everything they say it is. Delays kept pushing the new restaurant opening back for a year and a half. Atchana and Steve built everything from scratch starting from an empty shell, so waiting was definitely the hardest part.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Atchana’s Homegrown Thai story. Tell us more about the business.
We are known for authentic Thai food served in a friendly quirky atmosphere with a killer saltwater reef aquarium and hand-made wood furniture and decor. Plus, we have a big wrap-around sidewalk cafe and love to open our small restaurant up to make it an indoor-outdoor dining experience.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck and random good fortune are everything. So far, we have been the beneficiaries of an inordinate amount of benevolent coincidences, Fingers crossed.
