Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Morrissey.
Anne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1986 with a degree in Communications and Broadcasting. I thought I wanted to be on the news as an anchor. I did get a job in a TV station, but not as an anchor or course. I left after a few months and began my search for the perfect job… It was a search that would take years!
I had no trouble getting a job, it was actually liking it that was my problem. Finally, after quitting my 44th job, I had a revelation. There was no perfect job for me. I was searching for something I would never find, because I was not meant to be an employee, I was meant to be the boss and do my own thing. I was free to create my own work experience!
I decided to become a Personal Stylist. Every time I watched Fashion Emergency or What Not To Wear I found myself absolutely fascinated and glued to the whole process.
I did not know exactly how to begin, so I started working at Chico’s and fitted women of all ages, shapes and sizes. It was great experience, and during this time I started getting clients for my own business, Morrissey Style Consulting, a personal styling service for women.
That was almost 11 years ago and I have grown by leaps and bounds as a business owner and stylist. In addition to Morrissey Style Consulting, I run The Sharper Image Group to work with business and corporations on Image Mastery and Executive Styling. And Sharp Dressed Man works with individual men on their personal style.
The business has grown to the point that I can no longer do it on my own and I’m in the process of hiring and training stylists to help me. It’s an exciting time for me and I’m ready to take the next steps to become the “go to” styling agency in South Florida!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. It took a while to realize that styling and “the business of styling” are two totally different things, and that you cannot have one without the other.
Years ago, I used to think of myself as more of an artist than a business person, but I have made the necessary shifts in perspective and I’m currently working with a group of women entrepreneurs on business development and growth strategies.
I struggled with accounting and target marketing and website design. Finally, I just had to learn to do it all myself, because I was constantly disappointed in the results I would get when outsourcing. Social media is a continuing struggle. I’m just not into it. I know I need to get with the program, but it’s really not something I’m good at or interested in…
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Morrissey Style Consulting – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m in the business of Personal Styling for men and women. I’m the owner of Morrissey Style Consulting and Sharp Dressed Man. I work with people who don’t have time to shop and put outfits together, but they still want to look good. We specialize in helping clients who are currently experiencing “style challenges”. The work is to shop for them and style them in a way that makes them feel confident and attractive, so that they can be seen in their best light and achieve their greatest potential.
I’m proud of my client’s achievements. Once we’ve finished our process, they call, text and email me with their success stories. They got the job, the new relationship, they feel like they can put themselves out there now and it’s fantastic!
I’m known for the Book of Outfits that every client receives. It contains their entire wardrobe photographed with all the accessories, shoes, and bags. They love it because they don’t have to stress over what to wear, they can just pick up the book and select the right outfit for the occasion.
I don’t know what other stylists are doing or what sets me apart from them. I’m focused on providing life changing experiences for the people that come to me every day, and that keeps me very busy. I don’t see it as a competition. The clients who are supposed to work with me always show up, just as they do for the other stylists in town. There’s more than enough for everyone to do well…
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have lived in a lot of places and South Florida has been home to me now since 2007. I love all of the different neighborhoods and the wildly different energy of each… The variety of experiences available is just incredible, and it never gets old. The insane driving however, that is my biggest issue with living here – because I drive a lot!
