Today we’d like to introduce you to Anica Shpilberg.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
In I952, I was born in Lima, Peru. I am the daughter of Eastern European parents who emigrated in search of a better live. Six years later, we moved to Piura, a sleepy, dusty town, 800 miles north. They sent me to the best all-girls school in town, a Catholic school run by Dominican nuns. I hated it all…until I met miss Montero in 1960. She was my first art teacher. Formal, proper, well dressed. I feared her, but she changed my life. She taught me colors, textures, and shapes; paper, parchment and canvas; and art engulfed my life.
In 1970, I got married and moved to Boston. Studied Interior design and created Mixed-Media projects inspired by the work of Morris Louis. In 1975, our family moved to Caracas, Venezuela, for a year that became 8. I had my first major art show in a real gallery.
In 1983, we moved to the New York City area. I started studying painting and steel sculpture at The Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, and at Pratt Graphics in NYC. I showed regularly in Connecticut and NYC galleries and in places around the world. To my delight, some collectors began to acquire more than on piece!
In 2005, we moved to Miami where I became a resident artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex. I continued to show my work around the world and developed collectors in Europe, Israel, South America, China and India. In recent years have showed nationally in California, Iowa, Massachusetts, NY, Miami, Texas, and Internationally in Lima, Krems, London and Shanghai.
In 2017, I opened Anica Art Studios, my own studio in Hollywood, Florida, and two Bakehouse artists joinedme: Amalia Brujis y Donna Lee Steffens. Thru the years, I have continued to add variety of mediums to my portfolio, from Steel and Stone to acrylics with mixed media and photography with and without intervention. What will be next?
Please tell us about your art.
Drenched in color, inspired by experience, shaped by emotion, my art has always been the language of my thoughts. Through my work I seek to bring awareness of the social and cultural clashes that are patent in our world today.
The starting points are digital photographs that I have taken during my travels, images of people and places that hope to capture their spirit, their beat, their struggle, and the feel of it all. I photograph them aiming to capture the reality and uniqueness of their lives and their environment, instants of a changing world.
Some of the photographs are then printed on canvas. Later with the help of mixed media (paper, fabric, wood, etc.) I collage them into the photograph to create the textures and layers to achieve the intended look or message. Some are printed on paper and are just left pristine.
Underlying this work are the unexpected joys that arise from transformation: extracting and magnifying uniqueness while creating something altogether new.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Art can be lonely, I have always look for either communities, when you around people you get inspired, dialog starts and ideas flow. Every city I have lived in I have join either meet ups or their art association. Now I enjoy working in my studio with my 2 friends, we met at the Bake house Art Complex and moved our studios to Hollywood FL.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
