Meet Angelle Barrett of ‘Poetry of Me’ in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelle Barrett.

Angelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been writing poetry since the 7th grade and I’ve always had an interest in writing. This summer, after I finished my classes, I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve always wanted to become an author so I began to start writing more poetry. I came up with the name of the book, the chapters, and the names of various poems before writing each poem.

It took me three months in total to write and publish my first book. I truly enjoy writing poetry and spreading words of encouragement. My future is brighter than ever and I cannot wait until my book becomes a New York Times Best Seller.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I write poetry well but I really had to step out of my comfort zone so that I can write better. It has been a battle with myself to complete my spoken word poetry and remaining consistent. There seems to be minimal support on my social media pages when I post snippets from my book but I always have to remember that this is only the beginning and God will see me through.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My business is being an author and a creative writer. I currently do not have a company but I do plan on owning my own non-profit organization in the future. I am a poet and I specialize in writing for the soul of Black People. The majority of my topics are about my experiences of being a Black Woman, an immigrant, and living in America. I am known for spreading positivity and light through every interaction that I have with individuals. I am most proud of my self for being so driven, headstrong, and committed to being a creative writer. I believe that my personality sets me apart from others because I differ from the antics of my generation.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of South Florida and the uniqueness of the different people. A lot of people are individualistic, but that’s just a trait of American people. I am from Jamaica so it is difficult sometimes to assimilate into the American lifestyle.
