Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelique Gonsalves.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angelique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got into my line of business not too long after graduating high school. My plan was to go to college out of state because I just wanted to get out of Florida. I was thinking if I’m going out of state I’m gonna need money so I decided to go to cosmetology school first. Growing up, I was always in the salon because my mom was a hairstylist so I had an idea of the money I could make doing that. So I started cosmetology with the intention of going to college after but…I strongly dislike school. I was like, “You know what this I like this, I’m good with this, so I’m gonna stick to this. Once I finished Cosmetology school (school was one year btw) I got an internship at a salon. I did that for a little while then started working at three other salons after that. I ended up going back to the salon I interned at and working as the owner’s assistant while building up my own clientele. I am so grateful to God for bringing me back there and placing me under such a great mentor in this industry. I’ve been working as a hairstylist for about eight years now and I love it. Not to brag or anything but I am amazing at what I do. I love being able to change the way someone looks/feels about themselves even if it’s just for that moment.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was absolutely not a smooth road lol! This industry can be tough especially when I was first starting out. The salon I work at now is fabulous but the ones before that were my toughest obstacles. I had a boss that was just so mean to me other people didn’t understand why he was always on my case. Then dealing with the cattiness of other stylist at another salon was a pain too. They would try and get me fired and steal customers, just ridiculous. The last obstacle was trying to establish myself as a stylus and building a clientele because that takes time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Je Suis Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a hairstylist.
I do pretty much everything but I’d say my specialty is color. I absolutely love it! The most satisfying thing to me is when I do highlights and I’m shampooing the hair and see those fresh highlights 😍 ugh, so good.
I am most proud of the relationship I develop with my clients. I love our conversations and being able to connect with them passed their hair.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m lucky to work in a salon that is like a family. We are truly a team. We help each other grow and we don’t hold each other back.
I’m lucky to have supportive people in my life.
