Meet Andres Gizzi and Amber Jadus of Gizzi’s Coffee House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andres Gizzi and Amber Jadus.

Andres and Amber, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For 21 years, Andres worked on a cruise line as a devoted manager of food and beverages based out of the Miami port. When he decided to step off the ships, he wanted to follow another passion – coffee. He has tried coffees around the world and brings to Gizzi’s only the best that he can find. Every day brings a different roast. The coffees we brew are always organic and Screen 18. He knew he wanted to start something unique, bringing different global coffees to locals. What we have at Gizzi’s is the result of 13 years of searching for the best, most diverse brews he could find. We’ve been working harmoniously with local bakers to bring the best treats to go with our coffees.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Andres spent the early parts of his life in the islands of Spain. English is his second language. He spent most of his life on the ships. When the ship docked and he finally left that part of his life behind he did not know what to expect in Miami. This was a new culture for him. His life was spent in Spain or on the sea. He needed to adjust to life in South Florida as he was opening and operating his own business. He learned through trial and error how to roast the best pot of coffee and how to ground the beans.

Please tell us about Gizzi’s Coffee House.
We are a coffee shop with only organic, Screen 18 coffees. We are known for our great prices, coffee, and food. We make every sandwich upon order. We have a small staff, so chances are we’ll get to know you if you come in on a repeat basis. We have a warm, welcoming shop with WiFi for those who have work to do, but we also have couches and magazines for people who are looking to relax.

We are most proud of our selection of brewed coffees. Every day brings a different roast. These coffees are found in Hawaii, Africa, Central and South America, and even from the Jamaican blue mountains on special occasions. We are also the only coffee shop that sells Peace of Cake homemade baked goods. These are always organic, gluten-free, vegan, and of course delicious.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
When Andres opened up Gizzi’s he jumped from one world to another. Leaving the ships and immediately opening a business was a hefty feat. He knew how to run a business, that was not the problem. The problem was the change he did not anticipate in the customers. On a ship, everyone is on holiday. They are relaxed and are there for the duration.

The staff is also there to stay. On land, people are not walking into a coffee shop early in the morning and staying the day. More often than not they expect a quick cup of coffee before the head off to work. The staff are not closed on to a boat. They have responsibilities and lives beyond the shop. He needed to learn how to be more flexible and adjust to the clientele. He describes it as going from “fantasy to reality.”
