Meet Andrea Lewis-McKenzie, DMD of Perfection Dental Spa in Plantation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Lewis-McKenzie, DMD.

Andrea, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Originally from Jamaica, I moved to South Florida to complete my bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management at FIU. After a few years in the hospitality field, I went on to earn my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Midwestern University in Arizona. I then completed an additional year of training in a General Practice residency at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, where my focus was treating patients with complex medical conditions that might prevent them from seeing a regular dentist.

I worked in corporate and private dental offices for a few years prior to opening my own office. It was during that time that I realized just how much most people feared going to the dentist, and that weren’t many offices designed to allay those fears. It was this realization that led me to open Perfection Dental Spa.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road, there has definitely been some challenges along the way. Our grand opening was scheduled in early September 2017, and if you recall, there was a hurricane right after Labor Day. We had to cancel all our appointments for the weeks after the hurricane and ended up postponing the opening until late September. As you can imagine, that’s not a great start for a new business.

One major hurdle is getting people to believe that as a dentist, I truly care about their well-being and that all the amenities are complimentary without any hidden costs. I believe in making each patient feel at ease and those amenities help to create a relaxed atmosphere and make them feel like they’re coming to a friend’s home versus walking into a dental office.

Many people believe that they can’t go to the dentist without having dental insurance. This unfortunately has lead many to neglect their dental health. It has been challenging to get people out of this mindset and to be open to affordable options that allow them to care for their teeth. Our office has created a great, affordable membership plan to help overcome this hurdle. While many patients have utilized our membership, many are still skeptical because of the traditional reliance on dental insurance.

An unexpected challenge we face is that some people are surprised to learn that as a dental spa, we see kids and offer a full range of services as a traditional dentist (e.g. cleanings, crowns, extractions, implants etc.) in addition to esthetic services such as facials and body treatments.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Perfection Dental Spa story. Tell us more about your practice.
My background in Hospitality gives me the exceptional ability to combine the artistry and precision of dentistry with a unique customer service perspective. Prior to opening my own office, I gathered feedback from patients, friends and even family members on what they liked and disliked about dental experiences they’ve had throughout their lifetime. I then used that feedback as a template to design my office in such a way as to make it less anxiety-inducing and more relaxed and inviting. I created a dental office with an atmosphere that mimics a small boutique hotel and spa. Soft music fills the air, there are diffusers with lavender essential oils, patients are pampered with hot towel service after each dental visit, and there is a complimentary full body massage chair to top it off.

Our on-staff medical esthetician is available by appointment for facials and body treatment. Our spa treatments and retail products are from Nannic, one of Europe’s top cosmeceutical companies. All our patients are treated like family and are fully involved in customizing all aspects of their dental care. Our initial consultation includes intra-oral photos in addition to the usual x-rays. That way, patients can see what we see and don’t just have to take our word that treatment is needed. During dental treatments, patients can choose to listen to music via noise-canceling headphones or watch a TV show/ movie on one of the many streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, etc.).

At Perfection Dental Spa, we try to do our part to help the environment by being paperless. Patient forms are conveniently completed online in the comfort of your home or on the go on your mobile device. Patients can also schedule their visits online without having to call the office. Want to make your dental appointment at 2 a.m.? Sure! The online portal is open! Our hours are convenient even for the most demanding schedule, as we’re open during the week, and we’re open every Saturday.
