Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Sofis.
Amelia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been very active and interested in health and fitness. I began competing on the track team at age 10; I had to take a break and have open-heart surgery at age 12, which inspired me to make running, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle my purpose and passion. I have not stopped running, exercising, and being very cognizant of my health since then. I attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, where I was a Division 1 scholarship athlete on the indoor and outdoor track teams. (200/400m) I studied Athletic Training.
My studies focused on first aid, injury recognition, prevention, rehabilitation, and introduced me to the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association). When I moved to Miami I continued my education in Exercise Science at Barry University and received my Master’s Degree I’ve worked as an athletic trainer and personal trainer, I love combining my two specialties. I use my knowledge to help others become the best version of themselves.
When I train; I incorporate postural, corrective, and rehabilitative exercises into all of my client’s workout plans. I work with clients from the age of 16-85. My approach; Every single body is different and should be treated that way!
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s difficult to make a name for yourself as a personal trainer based on your knowledge, programming, experience, and even ability. The personal training industry can be complicated as all trainers are commonly grouped together and clients don’t know what to look for. Many of us have gone to college and even graduate school to study and we have a passion to help people become healthy to avoid injury or disease which can be caused by inactivity or obesity. It’s unfortunate a lot of “trainers” get a basic certification online with little or no experience and they are labeled a “personal trainer”. In my experience, many of these trainers can give wrong information and injure their clients. It’s important to delineate what you need in a trainer before choosing just anyone because they look the part. So yes. It can be difficult competing in this new social media society but seeing my clients reach their goal through hard work and dedication is a great reward!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Amelia Sofis story. Tell us more about the business.
Currently, I am based in a Miami Beach gym but I work with multiple hotels and condos to train their guests or residents upon request.
I specialize in incorporating rehabilitative and postural exercise into an exercise program.
I take my programming very seriously each workout is planned weeks or months in advance and documented so we can track all progressions and set achievable, measurable goals.
It can be easy to make a “fun workout” but I plan an entire periodization program to achieve the client’s goals (fat loss, muscle gain, posture, knee pain, etc.) in stages to reduce injury, continue progressions. And avoid plateaus.
As I said before everybody is different and should be treated that way. There is no cookie-cutter program!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t usually believe in luck but every time I began a path away from personal training I was brought back. I can’t deny it is my passion and I’m lucky enough to have figured that out.
