Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Tollefson and Nichole Thomson.
Amber and Nichole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My business partner, Nichole Thomson and I, co-founded The Flamingo House because we found ourselves isolated in our home offices. As a telecommuter and freelancer, respectively, we were constantly interrupted by our barking dogs while on business calls and client meetings at home were far from professional.
We worked with a pool of creatives that were facing similar issues. The Flamingo House provided an affordable and collaborative solution. Aside from the standard office perks, members have access to our built-in studio which really sets us apart. We had very organic beginnings and since then have flown to new heights with our members. We are expanding for a Phase 3 of our business and we are committed to continuing to build a creative community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Let’s be honest, there are never smooth roads. If they are, please tell us so we can move there!
In the beginning of any business and especially coworking endeavor, there is always a top-heavy burden of expenses. It took time to spread the word, to educate awareness about what coworking was since it was a fairly new concept at the time, as well as we faced other struggles. We all wore many hats and had a great group of people around us who wanted to see this concept thrive, not only survive.
The struggle was just embracing the unknown and being broken. If we don’t have the tough times to go through, we will never appreciate the good stuff. This challenge inspired a quote on our wall. The last line reads, “We all need to embrace the struggle before we fly.”
Please tell us about The Flamingo House.
The Flamingo House is home to creative co-working. We have private offices, dedicated desks, open format, brainstorm rooms, event space, printing, coffee, a network of creatives and great vibes. We also have a studio so that really is a unique element for our members, as well as non-members. We are very proud of the collaborative vibe we have around us.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Some of my favorite childhood memories is running to the sideline for orange slices with my brothers and parents talking me through soccer encouragement.
